questions.

Primary Longman Express 6B 12 5 © Pearson Education Asia Limited

12th April, 20XX
Dear Sir / Madam

I am writing this letter in response to the article, ‘Plastic factory

brings jobs to Aberdeen’, which appeared in yesterday’s edition
5 of your newspaper. I live in a housing estate located close to
the factory. As stated in the article, jobs are created by the
factory. However, these jobs come at the cost of serious
environmental problems.

First, the factory puts so much pollution into the air. After going
10 hiking in the hills around the factory, my nose is lined with
black, ash-like material. It is disgusting! I go hiking to get fresh
air, not to breathe air pollution. On bad days, the area around
the factory is covered with an oily-looking cloud. The natural
beauty of Aberdeen will be ruined unless the factory stops
putting pollution into the air.
15
Second, many different types of chemicals are used to produce
plastic. Therefore, the area around the factory always smells
strongly of chemicals. Since the factory opened half a year ago,
I have had so many headaches that I have lost track of the
20 number. Besides, breathing chemical-smelling air can lead to
other health issues. If the factory doesn’t stop producing these
strong odours, many people living in the area are going to
become ill. In addition to creating health concerns, the smells
are disgusting!

25 I hope that this letter will encourage other Aberdeen residents

— and Hong Kongers in general — to express their concerns
about the plastic factory. The environment and the people and
animals living in it will continue to pay the price unless the
factory solves the problems mentioned above, or closes down
completely.

Sincerely,
Ryan Huang

Part D
Suzanna is writing a story for a contest at her school. Read the story and
answer the questions.

Once upon a time, there was a boy who liked to litter. His name was
Johnny. He was often punished for littering — by his parents, grandparents,
teachers — but nothing made him change his mind about it. He said to himself,
‘The Earth is enormous. It can’t be harmed by the littering of a single person.’

5 One Saturday afternoon, Johnny was bored. His dad was away on
business and his mum was at the office. The living room window was shaking
from the wind. Suddenly, Johnny got an idea. He went into the kitchen and
returned with a plastic bag filled with rubbish.

First, he tossed some cola cans out the window. They moved this way
10 and that way in the wind. Then he dropped several plastic bottles. He watched
them spin in the air until they landed in a nearby park. His little sister told him
to stop littering, but he just smiled naughtily.

Late that night, a fairy appeared in Johnny’s dream. Her name was Luna
and she was one of Mother Nature’s helpers. She was very tiny and had small,
15 fast-moving wings like a hummingbird. She told him that she needed to give
him a message from Mother Nature.

‘You’ll be sorry unless you stop harming the Earth,’ the fairy said.

‘What are you going to do — punish me?’ he laughed.

‘No, I’m going to show you something.’

20 The fairy flew away. Then the sky darkened and he saw so many awful
scenes – a park littered with rubbish, a beach covered with plastic bottles and a
river overflowing with soda cans.

When he woke up, he understood that a single person could indeed harm
the Earth. However, he knew that a single person could just as easily help the
25 Earth. So that’s what he planned to do.
