Who was Marilyn Monroe?
Born in Los Angeles, California on June the 1st 1926, was Norma
Jean Mortenson, or as most refer to her by her stage name: Marilyn
Monroe. She was the daughter of Charles Stanley Gifford and
Gladys Pearl Baker. With her father absent and her mother having
mental health issues, she was brought up in 12 different foster
homes throughout her childhood and eventually sent to an
orphanage. Marilyn Monroe was an American actress, singer and
model. Known for playing ‘blonde bombshell’ characters, she
caught the attention of many, making her profile steadily rise
following the initial successes in her acting career.
“A wise girl
knowns her limits,
a smart girl
knows that she
has none.”
-Marilyn Monroe
How her career took off.
Marilyn Monroe began a career of modeling after becoming a poster
girl in World War 2, which led to a film contract from 20th Fox
Century in 1946. Her early film appearances were minor but in films
such as ‘The Asphalt Jungle’ she began to get recognized for her
talent. By 1953, she had progressed to leading roles. One of her
landmark movies were ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ which showcased
her as the quintessential blonde bombshell, where the song she sang
‘Diamonds are a girl’s best friend’ remains a cultural touchstone.
How did Marilyn Monroe die?

As her career took off, Marilyn Monroe struggled

with mental illness and addiction. She had several
turbulent marriages and 3 miscarriages, which are
now attributed to endometriosis, a condition which
was often mistreated at the time. She died on
August 4th in 1962 at the age of 36 due to a
barbiturate overdose, and her death was ruled a
probable suicide.
“Give a girl the right
shoes, and she can
conquer the world.”
-Marilyn Monroe
