 A challenging career
Ria Chapman talks about the job she loves.
Growing up, I performed for and competed in many ballet competitions. When I was 14, I was introduced to aerial
dance. I was completely hooked. Although my parents would prefer me to become a vet or a tailor as they do, I
convinced them that aerial dance is my true passion, and they have been my constant source of strength since.
Aerial dance is more than circus arts, as many people might say. To perform this art form, artists dance while
hanging themselves on a rope or a fabric at a certain height. The movements used in an aerial dance have as much
art value as in any other dance form. “A ballet in the sky” would be the short introduction to the dance. Therefore, all
aerial dancers need training in both dancing and circuit techniques.
It is never easy to be an aerial dancer. A dancer only dedicates their time to dancing training. However, an aerial
performer goes through longer training for both aerial and dancing techniques. Dancers of this artform also need to
be more patient and cautious during training. Trying out a new technique might leave them injured and cost them
 their lifelong career.

At night, when it’s time for the shows, I always feel alive and energetic. I love it when I know that the
audience enjoy the performance and talk about it afterwards. However, not every night is a great one.

 perfect my next performances.
More audience have started to notice the dance, and there are more career opportunities for aerial
dancers like me. However, what motivates me the most is recognize familiar faces in the audience. They
saw me once then kept coming back. It gives me the strength to get over the fear of getting hurt and
