LARGE INTESTINE
• Receive waste material sent down from the Small
Intestine, absorb its fluid content and form the
remainder into faces to be excreted.
faeces
• Treat all disorders of the Yangming channel in
the head; this area includes the face and cheeks,
LARGE forehead, eyes, nose lips, ear gums and teeth.
INTESTINE : • Expelling wind, cold and heat from the exterior
portion of the body.
FU • Clearing wind-heat, interior heat and fire poison
from the areas traversed by the channel,
FUNCTIONS especially in the head.
• Clearing yangming fire which disturbs the Heart
and Spirit.
• Assisting the Lung in its function of opening the
water passages.
LARGE INTESTINE
SUPPLEMENTARY
POINTS
LI-10 (SHOUSANLI), LI-15 (JIAN YU), LI-18
(FUTU)
LI-10 Shousanli
• LOCATION:On the radial side of the
forearm, 2 cun distal to QUCHI LI-11,
on the line connecting QUCHI LI-
11 with YANGXI LI-5.
• Locate with the elbow flexed and with
the radial side of the arm upwards;
• First locate SHANGLIAN LI-9, then
locate SHOUSANLI LI-10 one cun
proximal to it
• This point is usually significantly
tender to palpation.
• NEEDLING:Perpendicular or oblique
insertion 0.5 to 1.5 cun.
Regulates qi and blood.
Activates the channel
ACTIONS Alleviates pain
Harmonizes the intestines
and Stomach
Pain and immobility of the arm and shoulder, wind
stroke, paralysis of the arm, numbness of the arm,
atrophy disorder, hemiplegia, contraction and
inflexibility of the elbow, lumbar pain with inability
to lie down.
Abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea,
periodic sensation of cold in the
INDICATIONS intestines, sudden turmoil disorder.
Toothache with swelling of the cheek,
deviation of the mouth, loss of voice.
LI-15 Jianyu
Meeting point of the Large Intestine
channel with the Yang Motility vessel
• LOCATION: In the depression which lies
anterior and inferior to the acromion, at
the origin of the deltoid muscle.
• If the arm is abducted, the two hollows
will be more easily palpable and are
often visible.
• NEEDLING: With the arm abducted,
perpendicular insertion directed
towards the center of the axilla, 1 to 1.5
cun
• Transverse-oblique insertion directed
distally towards the elbow, 1.5 to 2 cun.
Dispels wind-damp
Alleviates pain and benefits the
shoulder joint
ACTIONS Eliminates wind and regulates qi
and blood
Regulates qi and dissipates
phlegm nodules
• Shoulder pain, weakness of the
shoulder, wind-damp of the shoulder,
heat sensation in the shoulder,
redness and swelling in the shoulder,
inability to raise the arm to the head,
contraction and numbness of the arm,
INDICATIONS hemiplegia, wind paralysis, wind
stroke, wind atrophy disorder, wind
disease, heat in the four limbs, inability
to turn the head, painful obstruction of
the fingers.
LI-18 FUTU
Point of the Window of Heaven
• On the lateral side of the neck, level with
the tip of the laryngeal prominence,
between the sternal and clavicular heads
of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
• Location note
• i. Palpation of the sternal and clavicular
heads is made easier if the patient turns
their head away from the side to be
needled, whilst you apply resistance at the
chin;
• ii. This point may be located approximately
3 cun (one handbreadth) lateral to the
laryngeal prominence.
LI-18 FUTU
Point of the Window of Heaven
• Needling
• i. Perpendicular insertion 0.3 to
0.5 cun
• ii. Oblique insertion 0.5 to 0.8
cun.
Caution: deeper needling may
puncture the carotid artery or
jugular vein.
ACTION
Benefits the Alleviates
throat and cough and
voice wheezing
Swelling and pain of the throat,
sudden loss of voice, rattling
sound in the throat, goitre,
scrofula, difficulty in swallowing.
Indications
Cough, coughing with much
spittle, wheezing, asthma,
hypotension.

PRACTICE
LARGE INTESTINE
LI-5 (YANG XI)
On the radial side of the wrist, in the centre of the hollow formed by the tendons of extensor pollicis longus and brevis (anatomicalsnuffbox).

On the flexor aspect of the forearm, 7 cun proximal to Taiyuan LU-9, on the line connecting Taiyuan LU-9 with Chize LU-5.
LU-7 (LIEQUE)
On the radial aspect of the forearm, approximately 1.5 cun proximal to Yangxi L1-5 in
the cleft between the tendons of brachioradialis and abductor pollicis longus.
