GAUGE
18 sc + 18 rnds = about 4 in. (10 cm).
EXACT GAUGE IS NOT ESSENTIAL FOR THIS PROJECT.

STITCH EXPLANATION
sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) (Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 3
loops on hook – 1 st decreased.

TECHNIQUE EXPLANATION
Magic Ring: Wrap yarn around index finger. Insert hook into ring on finger, yarn over and draw up a loop.
Carefully slip ring from finger and work the sts of Rnd 1 into the ring.

NOTES
1. Parrot is worked in 13 pieces: Body, Upper Beak, Lower Beak, 3 Head Feathers, 2 Wings, Tail, 2 Feet,
and 2 Cheeks.
2. Body, Wings, Head Feathers, Feet, Lower Beak, and Tails are all worked in continuous rnds (spiral).
3. Cheeks are worked in a single joined rnd.
4. Upper Beak is worked back and forth in rows.
5. Eyes are embroidered onto face of Parrot.
6. Yarn color is changed while making Body to make face. To change yarn color, work last st of old
color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete st.
Proceed with new color. Do not cut old color until instructed. Carry color not in use along tops of sts
of previous rnd and work sts of current rnd over the carried strand, enclosing it inside the fabric.
7. Exact gauge is not essential for this project. We worked tightly with a small hook so that stuffing
wouldn’t show through.

If Parrot is intended for a baby or child, be certain that all pieces have been very securely sewn together.
Don’t leave a baby or child unattended with the Thiago!

BODY
With A, beginning at head, make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: Work 8 sc in ring; do not join, work in continuous rnds (spiral).
Gently but firmly, pull tail to tighten center of ring.
Place a marker in last st made to indicate end of rnd. Move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each st around – you will have 16 sc in this rnd.

Rnds 14-19: With A, sc in next 15 sts; change to B, sc in next 16 sts; change to A, sc in last 29 sts.
Cut B. Work remainder of Body with A only.
Rnds 20-30: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 31: * Sc in next 8 sts, sc2tog; rep from * around – 54 sc.
Rnd 32: * Sc in next 7 sts, sc2tog; rep from * around – 48 sc.
Rnd 33: * Sc in next 6 sts, sc2tog; rep from * around – 42 sc.
Rnd 34: Working in back loops only, * sc in next 5 sts, sc2tog; rep from * around – 36 sc.
Begin stuffing piece and continue stuffing until piece is complete.

Drop loop from hook, but do not fasten off.

Join Sides of Upper Beak to sts of last rnd of Lower Beak

Place Upper Beak on top of Lower Beak, so that ends of rows of Upper Beak match the first 12 sts of last
rnd of Lower Beak.
Insert hook into end of Row 6 of Upper Beak, place dropped loop from Lower Beak on hook and draw
loop through, ch 1; insert hook into end of same row of Upper Beak then into first st of Lower Beak, and
work a single crochet (sc); continue working through both thicknesses, sc in end of next 11 rows of Upper
Beak and next 11 sts of last rnd of Lower Beak; leave last 8 sts of Lower Beak unworked.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing Beak to Body.

HEAD FEATHER I
With D, make a magic ring.

Toe I
Rnd 1 (RS): Sc in next 4 sts, sk next 13 sts, sc in next 3 sts; do not join, work in continuous rnds (spiral) – 7 sc.
Work over the 7 sc of Toe I only, leave the 13 skipped sts unworked for now. The skipped sts will be
worked into later to begin Toes II and III.
Rnd 2: Sc in next 5 sts, sc2tog – 6 sc.
Rnds 3 and 4: Sc in each st around.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through tops of sts of last rnd. Pull tail to close opening and knot
securely.

Toe II
Rnd 1 (RS): From RS, join C with sc in first skipped st following Toe I, sc in next 3 sts, sk next 6 sts, sc in
next 3 sts; do not join, work in continuous rnds (spiral) – 7 sc.
Work over the 7 sc of Toe II only.
Rnd 2: Sc in next 5 sts, sc2tog – 6 sc.
Rnds 3 and 4: Sc in each st around.

Toe III

Toe IV
With C, make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in ring; do not join, work in continuous rnds (spiral).

CHEEKS (make 2)
With E, make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: Work 8 sc in ring; join with sl st in first sc.
Gently but firmly, pull tail to tighten center of ring.
Fasten off.
Rep to make 2nd Cheek.

FINISHING
Using photograph as a guide and yarn tails still attached to pieces whenever possible, assemble Thiago
as follows:
With C, sew Beak to face, between Rnds 11 and 18.
With black embroidery floss, embroider eyes between Rnds 12 and 15 of face, embroidering 3 sides of a
square, 2 sts wide and 2 sts high.
With D, sew Head Feather I to top of Body, between Rnds 4 and 5.
With D, sew Head Feather II to top of Body, between Rnds 3 and 4.
With D, sew Head Feather III to top of Body, between Rnds 2 and 3.
With A, sew Tail to back of Body, between Rnds 27 and 32.
With D, sew Wings to sides of Body, between Rnds 18 and 28.
With C, sew Feet to bottom of Body so that Toes I, II, and III point towards front of Parrot and the Toe IV’s
point towards each other near center of bottom of Body.
With E, sew Cheeks to sides of face, between Rnds 15 and 19.
Weave in ends.
