Number 2
NURSE AMY
Hold on, hun, you're alright. Can
you hear me? Breathe.
Chloe takes a moment to catch her breath.
NURSE AMY (CONT'D)
It's okay. You're okay. Just
breathe for me, alright? You've
been resting for some time, I can't
have you getting up all of a
sudden. Do you know where you are?
CHLOE
Huh?
NURSE AMY
Do you know where we are right now?
CHLOE
Um... no.
NURSE AMY
That's alright. You're at the
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Do you
know which city that's in?
Chloe takes a second to respond.
CHLOE
No, I forgot. I'm sorry.
DOCTOR GERBER
Six years.
Chloe tries controlling her breath, struggling to take this
all in.
CHLOE
Jesus Christ. You said I was with
friends, right? Shouldn't someone
tell them? Do my parents know I'm
awake?
Chloe hopes to God what she is thinking isn't true.
CHLOE (CONT'D)
Are they alive?
DOCTOR GERBER
No.
Chloe lets out a loud GASP.
DOCTOR GERBER
You're okay Chloe. I need you to relax.
CHLOE
Jesus Christ. Oh my fucking god. Oh
my god.
CHLOE (CONT'D)
Did I know that? Did "before" me
know that?
DOCTOR GERBER
No. You didn't.
CHLOE
How am I okay? What happened?
DOCTOR GERBER
You were brought in on a Saturday
night. ALcohol was involved.
Apparently you ran a red light. I
need to double-check the files we
have on you if you just give me a
moment. Oh, and your bag was
dropped off here and it hasn't been
touched since. They really wanted
me to tell you that. You can pick
it up at the front desk.
CHLOE
Can I leave?
5.
DOCTOR GERBER
Not quite yet.
Chloe anxiously gets up from the hospital bed, with sounds of
cans falling and desks being pushed around.
DOCTOR GERBER (CONT'D)
Chloe, I need you back here for
just one second. You're not fit to
walk on your own yet. Chloe.
Chloe falls onto the ground, defeated. The doctor helps her
back onto the hospital bed.
DOCTOR GERBER (CONT'D)
I get that you wanna leave. Trust
me, I want you out of here as soon
as possible for your own sake. But
your body needs time to adjust.
CHLOE
I don't know where I am. I don't
know where I am.
DOCTOR GERBER
Chloe, we need you to stay here for
a couple of weeks. Until then, I
want to tell you what happened.
Chloe's eyes meet Doctor Gerber's.
CHRISTINE
Oh my god, Kaiya.
KAIYA (O.S.)
What?
CHRISTINE
Just come here.
DAVID (CONT'D)
We're about to open up so let's go
outside.
CHLOE
Oh. Are you usually busy this
early?
DAVID
So where'd you move from?
CHLOE
I didn't move.
EXT. DELI
DAVID
There's no way you've been living
here without knowing one of the
greatest delis in all of Los
Angeles.
CHLOE
I have been here, technically. It's
a long story.
Chloe and David sit down at a table right outside the deli.
David starts writing down on his notepad without saying a
word.
CHLOE (CONT'D)
You're already taking notes?
DAVID
You're already asking questions?
CHLOE
What's your name?
DAVID
Boss.
CHLOE
Does that mean I'm hired?
David doesn't laugh.
DAVID
Can you describe a moment you had
to handle a difficult customer and
how did you manage the situation?
8.
CHLOE
Bad witty jokes...
David stares at Chloe, still unamused.
DAVID
In a previous experience, how have
you ensured all food items are
fresh for consumption?
CHLOE
How would that even be possible?
Would I have to try every single
ingredient and make sure it tastes
fine? Because I feel like that
could bring like a serious lawsuit
or something.
DAVID
What is your approach to learning
about new products in the deli
department? I'll answer that,
acting like you know more than
everybody else. Have you worked at
a deli before? Or even any type of
restaurant?
CHLOE
Ummmmmmm, not, not...no.
DAVID CHLOE (CONT'D)
Then what makes you think you /greatest deli in all of Los
could get a job at the/ Angeles? I don't know. But I
figured it was worth a shot.
Chloe leans forward on the table.
CHLOE (CONT'D)
Listen, I said I didn't move here,
and that is true technically. It's
a long story. But I'm in a similar
situation. I feel new here. I won't
be able to afford to live much
longer if I don't get some kind of
job. So I kind've need this.
DAVID
Then why not work at a gas station
or somewhere else?
CHLOE
Because this is the greatest deli
in all of Los Angeles.
9.
CHLOE
It's really me. Is it really you?
CHRISTINE
So you got the note?
CHLOE
That was you?
(beat)
CHRISTINE
Yeah. Listen, would you wanna come
over? If you're not busy?
CHLOE
I think I can fit it into my
schedule.
CHLOE
I'm sorry?
CHRISTINE
You seemed scared shitless at the
thought of knocking on my door so
it must be important. And stop
saying sorry.
CHLOE
How'd you-
CHRISTINE
I saw you panicking from my window.
What do you need?
CHLOE
Oh, yeah it's probably nothing.
I've been out of town for... a
while and thought I had a friend
who lived here. But you could go
back inside I'm sorry for bothering
you.
CHRISTINE
What's the name?
CHLOE
What?
CHRISTINE
(over enunciating)
What was the friend's name?
Chloe pulls out the same crumbled letter and hands it to her.
CHRISTINE (CONT'D)
Why does it smell like a hospital?
CHLOE
Because its been in one for seven
years.
Christine's eyes widen in disbelief.
CHLOE (CONT'D)
Uhh... Ally? Are you Ally?
CHRISTINE
Come on in.
12.
CHRISTINE
Look at the letter she's holding.
CHLOE
Oh yeah, here.
Chloe hands over the letter to Kaiya.
KAIYA
Smells like a hospital.
CHRISTINE
It's been in one. For a long time.
Kaiya looks at Chloe, then the letter, and right back to
Chloe, connecting the dots.
KAIYA
It could've stayed there longer.
CHRISTINE
Kaiya.
Kaiya walks over to the other side of the room.
CHLOE
I'm sorry, did I do something to
offend you? Or...
KAIYA
Something like that.
CHRISTINE
You can take a seat Chloe.
Chloe sits down on the couch while Kaiya sits on the chair
right across from her, staring.
CHLOE
So how'd you guys meet? I mean you
girls. You know what I mean.
KAIYA
Why are you here?
CHLOE
Well, it's a bit difficult to
explain. I was in a coma for... it
doesn't even matter how long.
KAIYA
No, I know that. Why are you here?
14.
CHLOE
I don't... I wanna say I lost
everyone but I don't even remember
having anyone in the first place. I
woke up from the longest nap of my
life with a letter in my hand and
here I am.
CHRISTINE
Call the number in your letter,
Chloe.
Chloe looks at the number and starts dialing.
CHRISTINE (CONT'D)
What does it say below the number,
Chloe?
CHLOE
Call me when you get back.
Christine's phone starts ringing.
CHRISTINE
So why didn't you?
CHLOE
It was the second thing I did.
CHRISTINE
After?
CHLOE
Taking in an entire new world. I
called seventeen times, no one
picked up.
KAIYA
Eighteenth could've been the charm.
CHRISTINE
You were in a coma for the entire
seven years?
CHLOE
Yeah. How do you guys know I was in
a coma.
CHRISTINE
I was there the day that letter was
written. Maybe the coma was a
blessing. I wouldn't want to
remember that day either.
15.
CHLOE
I can see this is a sensitive issue
for you guys so I'm sorry to ask.
But I've been in your house for ten
minutes now and I have no idea who
any of you are. So who are?
CHRISTINE
"Call ne when you get back" was
what your sister wrote.
KAIYA
You really don't remember any of
it?
Chloe shakes her head.
KAIYA (CONT'D)
You took my life.
CHRISTINE
I think we'll be here for a while.
I'll go make some tea.
KAIYA
She was actually just leaving.
CHLOE
I haven't lived too long but I
haven't been treated worse by
anyone else. And I don't even know
who the hell you are So why am I
getting the strangest feeling that
I've done something wrong? You
don't have to be on bad terms with
someone you've barely met. So tell
me, how could I have wronged
someone I just met, to the point
where they aren't even willing to
look at me? What could I have done
so wrong?
Kaiya stands up from her chair, finally making eye contact
again.
KAIYA
You killed my sister you piece of
shit. I can't help but be on bad
terms with you.
CHRISTINE
Sorry, Chloe, you should go now.
16.
In utter disbelief and shock, Chloe walks out the door, with
faint sounds of Christine and Kaiya's conversation.
KAREN ANDERSON
You didn't answer my question. Why
haven't I seen you before?
CHLOE
Well, that's because I just moved
in, Karen.
A beat.
KAREN ANDERSON
How'd you know that was my name?
Kelly hands Chloe her water bottle.
KELLY WOLL
Don't worry Ms. Anderson, she's
with me.
KAREN ANDERSON
Are you sure?
KELLY WOLL
I'm sure.
Kelly unlocks the door.
KELLY WOLL (CONT'D)
Come in.
CHLOE
I'm what?
KELLY WOLL
You were trying to get into my
apartment. Yours is next door.
CHLOE
Shit, I'm sorry. How'd you know?
KELLY WOLL
Because the owner was just
murdered.
Chloe gets a pale look on her face.
KELLY WOLL (CONT'D)
I'm kidding. I just haven't seen
anyone walk in or out of there. Not
even once.
CHLOE
My sister lived there a bit before
me.
KELLY WOLL
Oh shit. Why haven't I seen her
before?
CHLOE
Well by "a bit" I mean six years.
KELLY WOLL
No one's lived there for six years?
CHLOE
No one. But apparently her will
covered the rent for me so there's
that.
KELLY WOLL
Chloe, I'm sorry I don't know what
to say. I wish I could've met her.
CHLOE
Me too.
CHLOE
None.
David slams his notebook shut.
DAVID
Awesome. Good luck.
CHLOE
Thanks.
Chloe stands there, patiently. A man finally walks in.
CHLOE (CONT'D)
Hi, what can I get for you?
NICHOLAS KOALEMOS
You guys got a bathroom?
CHLOE
Do we uhh...
David shakes his head.
CHLOE (CONT'D)
No, we don't have a bathroom,
sorry.
Nicholas walks out of the deli. David sighs and walks out of
the room.
CHLOE
Cool.
Kelly walks away.
CHLOE
Okay cool. Cool.
They have a seat on the couch.
KELLY WOLL
So were you in the area your whole
life, or...
CHLOE
No. No, I uh...just moved.
KELLY WOLL
Where from?
22.
CHLOE
Not...not too far from here. Yeah.
KELLY WOLL
So what do you think of... I don't
know, everything so far?
CHLOE
I don't know. The people are..
kinda crazy. Besides you of course.
Um, yeah besides that there's not
much going on.
KELLY WOLL
But everything going on at the same
time.
CHLOE
Exactly. Exactly.
KELLY WOLL
You got a boyfriend?
CHLOE
A what? No. I...
KELLY WOLL
I'm sorry. That was weird I
shouldn't have asked that, I
apologize.
CHLOE
No, it's okay.
A beat.
CHLOE (CONT'D)
I don't, to answer your question.
Kelly chuckles awkwardly.
KELLY WOLL
Cool. Yeah, same.
CHLOE
You thinking about seeing anyone?
KELLY WOLL
I don't. I guess I'm kind of
figuring my own life out right now.
But if someone worth it, worth my
time comes around, I think I'll...
go for it. I don't know.
