Statement of Purpose
As an avid reader of popular science journals at my high school level, it used to amaze me to
think about how modern technologies have transformed different sectors & contributed to good
social outcomes. By the time I got admitted to college, I had realized my eagerness to
comprehend difficult science topics from a theoretical perspective and to conceptualize the
things we are being taught. I got the perfect platform to explore the world of computer science
when I started my bachelor's in computer science & engineering at United International
University (UIU). From the very early few classes of my first semester, while starting to write
codes in C, to finally being selected as the teaching assistant for securing a top position in the
batch and awarded as the "Summa-Cum-Laude" at the end of completing my B.Sc. with a grade
of point of 3.93 out of 4, my aspirations to engage myself in the research arena focusing on
machine learning & artificial intelligence motivated me to complete my Master’s in Data Science
with more enthusiastic to grow myself in this domain.
I was skeptical about my undergraduate thesis topic at the beginning. However, as soon as I
started my Artificial Intelligence and Pattern Recognition courses, the concepts and applications
taught in these two courses enthralled me to pursue my research in this area. Soon, with extreme
curiosity, I gathered lots of knowledge regarding this field and learned many algorithms,
followed by starting my thesis in Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning. My
devotion and perseverance made me possible to accomplish my thesis by obtaining the highest
grade and publishing my first paper, "Similarity Measure Algorithms for the English Language,"
which contributed to the reduction of time and increased accuracy in terms of checking students'
scripts.
From the beginning of my bachelor's, I worked as a Grader in the department of CSE at my
university UIU. My core responsibility was to check students' assignments and prepare their
grade sheets. I was one of the very few students in my 3rd and 4th year who was elected as an
undergraduate teaching assistant and used to conduct the lab classes of 1st-year and 2nd-year
students. Soon after completing my engineering degree, I started to work as a Teaching Assistant
at my university and, after a few months, joined Presidency University as an adjunct lecturer in
the Electrical and Computer Engineering department. Apart from taking classes, I also revamped
the strategies to upgrade the course materials and found innovative ways to make the lab classes
more interactive. My latest professional experience includes working as a full-time lecturer in the
department of CSE of the European University of Bangladesh, where I got the scope to explore
new topics while giving my lectures. At the same time, I engaged in research and published a
journal paper titled "Bengali Sign Language Detection using CNN and Transfer Learning
Algorithms" as a co-author that applies to deaf and mute people in our society. In addition, I also
contributed to a book titled "Deep Learning based Industrial Fault Diagnosis using Induction
Motor Bearing Signals."
I completed my M.Sc. in CSE (Major track is Data Science) in 2024 with a grade of point of 3.78
out of 4. After completing some of my M.Sc. courses, I was able to equip myself with more
structured knowledge of machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing
concepts that helped me to publish a paper titled "Bearing Fault Detection based on Internet of
Things using Convolutional Neural Network." Furthermore, being a machine learning enthusiast
and aspiring to contribute more in this domain, I completed my master’s. thesis in the field of
Machine learning and Natural Language processing which focused on aiding organizations in
hiring talent for different roles using different NLP and ML techniques.
My primary research interest lies in Machine Learning for social good. As a machine learning
enthusiast, my first paper, "Similarity Measure Algorithms for the English Language,"
contributes to the education sector, while my other work, "Bengali Sign Language Detection
using CNN and Transfer Learning Algorithms," applies to deaf and mute people of the
community which falls in a similar field. Therefore, it will be an excellent opportunity for me to
attend a Ph.D. in the field of Machine learning as it seems a perfect fit for my profile & area of
interest. At the same time, my experiences will also add diversity to the team I will join. I intend
to pursue my Ph.D. in the field of Machine learning & Optimization and my research experience
completely corroborates the research scope.
I intend to perform in a way that I can contribute to the social good. As much as I enjoy being a
researcher, I aim to create an impact through my work in my domain. The PhD program offered
by your lab at Dalhousie University will not only assist me in fulfilling my dreams but also
providing me with a perfect platform to showcasing my research skills in the applied machine
learning domain. Furthermore, upon completing my Ph.D. program, I intend to remain in
academia based on my experience. Finally, I am confident in my ability to contribute
significantly with my experience and motivation if I get accepted to the program.
