Why School should start later - Houd Rana

Ladies and gentlemen,

Have you ever felt like you're dragging yourself out of bed at 6am in the morning, barely awake,
without a wink of sleep and then expected to be fully alert in academic math at 8am? It's like
asking a car to run on no gas. That's why I believe that school should start later. It would be
revolutionary to all of us in so many ways we couldn't even imagine.

As Teenagers we require at least 8-10 hours of sleep per day. Scientists around the world agree
that teenagers are wired to fall asleep late, and we have no choice but to stay up late. You can see
how that would affect us when we have to wake up at 6am 5x a week. But that’s just how our
bodies function. Making us wake up at such an early time can be compared to asking a fish to
fly. This is without taking into account all the extracurricular activities that us kids have after
school such as, Sports, Assignments/Homework and any other extracurricular activities which
only weigh us down even more.

Starting school later would allow us to sleep longer, which would make us more focused and
energized. Just imagine feeling refreshed and prepared to take on the day, instead of fighting to
stay awake through your first few classes. Some would argue that this change is not a big deal,
but I do find it important. Those sleep deprived nights create a bad habit that leads to stress,
anxiety, and even is a massive issue for your body's health. After some time, it all snowballs up
and we end up burning out. This later start time could be the push we need to eliminate stress and
improve our lives. And it’s not just students who would benefit. Teachers/Staff would be more
engaged, awake students, leading to a better classroom environment. Plus, we’d all be less likely
to miss school or show up late because we’d be well-rested causing better attendance and grades.
This change could be a win-win for everyone.

In conclusion, starting school later isn’t just a luxury, it’s a necessity. By making this change,
we’re not just helping ourselves get more sleep, we’re giving ourselves the chance to learn
better, feel better, and do better. Thank you for your time.
