Lesson 1 “Language”: Common and Proper Nouns

Academic Year: 2024/ 2025

WARM UP:

Start with a quick game of Noun Brainstorm. Write the word "Nouns" on the board.

Ask students to quickly shout out things they can see around them (e.g., "book," "teacher," "desk"). Write their
answers on the board.

Explain that all the words they just shared are nouns because they name people, places, or things.

Briefly explain that nouns can be divided into two types: common nouns (general names) and proper nouns
(specific names).

Use an example: "City" is a common noun, but "New York" is a proper noun.

PROCEDURES:

- Give students a list of mixed common and proper nouns (e.g., dog, Paris, school, Emma).

- As a class, categorize each noun together, identifying which are common and which are proper.

- You can use a T-chart on the board to sort the nouns.

- Ask students to fill in the blanks with proper nouns (e.g., "I visited _____ last summer."
Expected answer: a proper noun like "London").

- Answer practice book p.61 - 62

ASSESSMENT:

- Exit Ticket:

Before leaving, students must write two sentences:

One with a common noun (e.g., "I have a cat.")
