METHOD STATEMENT

1.0 Scope : This method statement covers the requirements for surface Preparation and
application of high performance coating for steel structures against corrosion.

2.0 Paint Specification : Shaji Paints specification and data sheets.

3.0 Method of Surface Preparation:.Manually prepared surfaces should be to a minimum standard of St 3

BS 7079: Part A1: 1989 at the time of coating Ensure surfaces to be coated
are dry and free from all traces of surface contaminants.
4.0 Application Procedure:

4.1 Primer : Poxyguard Epoxy Universal Primer.

Can be over coated within 6 hours at 350C

Check DFT after Priming 5 Readings per M2 (Scope: Applicator)

4.2 Mid Coat : Poxyguard Epoxy MIO.

Can be over coated within 6 hours at 350C

Check DFT after Priming 5 Readings per M2 (Scope: Applicator)
4.3 Mid Coat : Poxyguard Epoxy Mastic.

Can be over coated within 8 hours at 350C

Check DFT after Priming 5 Readings per M2 (Scope: Applicator)

4.4 Polyurethane Top Coat : Thaneguard PU Topcoat.

Check DFT after Priming 5 Readings per M2 (Scope: Applicator)

4.5 The initial wet coat film will be measured for correct thickness by employing wet film gauges at intervals
Where the thickness is found to be less than the specified thickness, the area may be re-considered for
acceptance, subject to the following conditions:

• All DFT specifications quoted are mean values.

• Tolerance - Assuming that the reading are normally distributed:
68 % of the readings are within ± 10 %
95 % of the readings are within ± 15 %
99 % of the readings are within ± 20 %
4.6 for areas of under-thickness, which fail to comply with the remedial action, will be taken to increase the
material thickness to those deficient areas

Work and Inspection Instructions – for Spray Application

5.0 Prior to commencement the Supervisor / Foreman / Applicator will comply with the following:
a) Sufficient material to be conveniently placed by the spraying equipment to ensure continuity of
feed.Pumps, spray guns and all spraying equipment to be in a clean state and so positioned to
optimize the spray area available.
b) Prior to application, the Supervisor / Foreman / Applicator will record that spray conditions are
within agreed manufacturers stated limits by taking substrate and air temperature readings.
5.1 The provision of protective shading for stored material will reduce the negative affects of high
temperature.
5.2 When the pump / sprayer unit is to be left for an extended time period, it will be thoroughly
cleaned with solvent cleaning fluid and left ready for re-use.

6.0 For situations where material is to be applied in more than one coat (as approved per spray pass), at
least six hours, depending on prevailing conditions, should lapse between coats but not more than
two coats in as single day to be applied.
Temperature Epoxy Coating Tropical use - Epoxy Paints at the time of mixing should not exceed a
temp of 35 C. Use of these products outside of the pot life may result in inferior adhesion
properties even if the materials appear fit for application. Thinning the mixed product will not
alleviate this problem. It is not advisable to apply epoxy coatings when the air and substrate
temperatures exceed 45 C. These conditions can introduce paint film formation defects, such as dry
spray, bubbling and pin holing etc.

7.0 Repair Process

Identify and assess the damages
7.1 Light Damage
Areas where only the top coat is damaged without any damage to the entire paint system need to
be lightly abraded followed by a full coat of the top coat
7.2 Heavy Damage
Areas where heavy damage has occurred need to apply Epoxy Universal Primer Ensure smooth
feathering of the coating edges Apply full system.

8.0 Drummed Materials:

8.1 Shaji Paints products are supplied as a 2 pack units as stated in Technical Data Sheet.

8.2 Storage temperature should generally not exceed 350C and the material temperature should not
exceed 450 C at time of application.
8.3 The material can be stored for up to 24 months from date of shipment. For reason of QA / QC
monitoring each batch/consignment will be completely used up before following batch /
consignment is started.
9.0 Weather Conditions:

9.1 Prior to application of the paint coatings the substrate and air Temperatures should be taken, for
freshly applied coatings could be detrimentally affect unless they are applied under the following conditions :

Air Temperature > +200C.

Humidity < 85%RH
Steel Temperature > +30C above dew point < 400C
No condensation on substrate.
9.2 Prior to Service / Use the system should be cured for a minimum of 5 days at minimum of 23C temp
before putting it into service.

10.0 Safety:
10.1 All necessary personal protective equipment to be provided and worn in accordance with the site
safety requirements.
The site of all work activities will be kept in a clean and tidy manner in accordance with the site safety
requirements.
10.2 Storage and handling of materials will be carried out in accordance with manufacturer
recommendations and Health and Safety information.
