ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION

“Our impulses are too strong for our judgment sometimes.”

The word Nurse comes from Latin word "NUTRICIUS"which means nourishes fosters

and protects. In theWebster's New World Dictionary (1975), the word 'Nursing'has a

wide range of meanings which, however, fall into thefollowing three categories

according to the basic ideasexpressed. Nursing means to nourish, to protect, to support,

to train, to educate and to supply with whatever promotes growth, development or

progress; and to give curative care and treatment to the sick and infirm. Mental and

physical states of exhaustion have been known for a long time, but it was Freuden

Berger in 1974 who first coined the term “burnout” for the mental and physical

exhaustion of voluntary workers in various social fields. The term “burnout”, mainly

applied to the caring professions, defines the breakdown of energy resources and

adaptability as a reaction to chronic stress.

The objectives of study are:

 To assess the impulsive behavior among nurses.

 To evaluate burnout among nurses.

 To find the effect of the Impulsive behavior on burn out among Nurses

 To find association between impulsive behavior and selected socio demographic

variables among nurses.

ix
 To find association between burn out and selected socio demographic variables

among nurses.

 HYPOTHESES

 H1: There is significant effect of The Impulsive behavior on burn out among Nurses

at the level of p≤0.05.

 H2: There is significant association between impulsive behavior and selected socio-

demographic variable at the level of p≤0.05.

 H3: There is significant association between burnout and selected socio-

demographic variable at the level of p≤0.05.

The conceptual framework adopted for the present study was based on ROY’S

ADAPTATION MODEL

The review of literature helped the investigator to formulate and to adopt methodology

for the study.

Methods:

A non-experimental research approach was adopted where 60 staff nurse were

selected using self structured rating scale and standard rating scale technique for the

convenient study and from that sample till the point of saturation for qualitative analysis

was taken using purposive sampling. A self-structured tool to assess socio demographic

variables and self-structured rating scale to find the effect of impulsive behavior on

burnout among nurses working in selected hospital. Were used qualitative data was

collected by case qualitative with 60 staff nurse and the responses were recorded.

Collected data was analyzed using descriptive analysis.

x
Result:

Qualitative findings suggest aneffect of impulsive behavior on burnout among staff

nurse participating in mental health services. Total mean score for response of effect of

impulsive behavior on burnout among staff nurse 41.32 ± 1.67. Association between

impulsive behaviors on burnout in staff nurse and their selected socio-demographic

variables like age, gender, religion, marital status, area of current residency, educational

qualification, monthly income in rupee, total work experience, area of current

workingeffect of impulsive behavior on burnout. Mean and percentage analysis shows

that overall mean score of impulsivity as25.75±6.23whereas that of burn out is 6.23 The

difference in mean was analyzed using paired t-test and existence of significant

relationship between these two variables was proved “t” value calculated that is 9.11 is

higher than table value (2.05) at p> 0.05 level of significant. Hence H2 that is there is a

significant effect of impulsive behavior on burnout at the level of p> 0.05 significance is

accepted.

Key words: impulsive behavior, burnout, urgency, interpersonal relationship,

violence/aggression, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, personal
accomplishment.
