ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Health care is one of the fundamental organizations which requires

emotionally intelligent person. Without emotion the person is unable to make
decision. Nurses are the key person that caters care to individual. While providing
care she should be emotionally stable, confident, understand one’s own emotions and
others too.

Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses cope with a variety of stressors on a daily and
ongoing basis at work, such as conflict, overwork, working shifts, coping with death,
unclear authority levels, and high levels of stress (Aqtam et al., 2023). Developing
emotional intelligence (EI) is one method of handling work-related stress. EI is a
collection of noncognitive aptitudes, efficiencies, and skills that affect nurses’
capacity to effectively manage pressure from the environment and help them get over
work-related stress (Shahin, 2020).

As nurses are the chief contributors in charge of care of individual, so there is

a necessity to create awareness about emotional intelligence among nurses. The study
in the hospital setting reveals that emotions are the dominant factor which directly
affect the patient care. The negative and positive emotion of nurses alter their caring
behaviour towards patient. It’s high time to make nurses familiarized of emotional
intelligence. So, this study is conducted on nursing staff working in selected hospital
to assess the effect of emotional intelligence on their job performance.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

 To assess the level of Emotional Intelligence among nursing staff working in

specialized units of selected hospitals of Indore.
 To assess the level of Clinical Performance among nursing staff working in
specialized units of selected hospitals of Indore.
 To find out the correlation between level of Emotional Intelligence and
Clinical Performance among nursing staff working in specialized units of
selected hospitals of Indore.
 To find the association of Emotional Intelligence among nursing staff
working in specialized units of selected hospitals with their selected socio-
demographic variables
 To find the association of Clinical Performance among nursing staff working
in specialized units of selected hospitals with their selected socio-demographic
variables.
Hypotheses

 H1 - There is a significant association between level of Emotional Intelligence

and selected socio demographic variables of nursing staff working in
specialized units of hospital.
 H2 - There is significant association between level of Clinical Performance
and selected socio-demographic variables of nursing staff working in
specialized units of hospital.
 H3 - There is significant correlation between level of Emotional Intelligence
score and clinical performance score of nursing staff working in specialized
units of hospital.

In view of explaining the concepts of the study, the investigator has

adopted Hildegard E Peplau’s interpersonal relationships model (1952) to
conceptualize the research.

Hildegard E Peplau’s interpersonal relationships model is based on

psychodynamic nursing, which applies principles of human relations to problems that
arise at all levels of human experience.

The four phases of interpersonal relationship are Orientation phase, Identification

phase, Exploitation phase and Resolution phase. During these phases, the
investigator assumes various roles such as teacher, resource person, counselor, leader,
technical expert & guide.

The review of literature involves the systematic identification, location, scripting and
summary of the written material that contains information on research problems. It
broadens the understanding and gains an insight necessary for the development of
broad conceptual context into which the problem files.
The literature review that was undertaken for conducting the study has been presented
under the following headings-

2.1 Review of literature related to emotional Intelligence among staff nurses.

2.2 Review of literature related to clinical performance among staff nurses.

The study has utilized quantitative research approach. It is an inquiry into

an identified problem, based on testing a theory composed of variables measured with
numbers and analysed by using descriptive or inferential statistics.

The study utilized descriptive correlational research design to assess the level
of Emotional Intelligence and the clinical competence among nursing staff.

Variables are an attribute to which numerical or values are assigned. Two

types of variables are identified in the study.

In the present study dependent variable refers to the level of emotional

intelligence and clinical competence among nursing staff.

It describes the socio-demographic variables. It comprises of 9 items for

obtaining information regarding: - Age, Gender, Religion, Marital Status, Professional
Qualification, Monthly Income Of Family, Type Of Family, Total Working
Experience, Working Area.

The study was conducted at Bhandari hospital, Indore. Well-established hospitals well
known for its treatments.

In this study, accessible population refers to nursing staff working in Bhandari

hospital Indore, and available at the time of data collection. The conclusion of the
research study is based on the data obtained from the accessible population and
statistical inferences were made only to the group from which the sample was
selected.

The sample for this study comprised of 100 nursing staff working in specialized units
of Bhandari hospital, Indore.

Non probability convenient sampling technique was used, in which subject were
selected according to the availability of the sample.
The reliability for application of tool was tested using the Karl Pearson correlation
method. Instrument reliability is the consistency with which it measures the target
attribute. The calculated value was r = 0.93 (P = 0.001) which signifies that the tool is
highly reliable.

The pilot study is a preliminary investigation of the same general character in the
major study, which is designed to acquit the researcher with problems that can be
corrected the structured knowledge questioner was given to each respondent to
answer the questions. The pilot study conducted on 27.08.2023.

The researcher had taken formal permission from the principal and research and
ethical committee of Choithram College of nursing, Indore and individual written
consent was taken from each participant. Then the investigator had proceeded with
data collection to which the investigator selected the sample who were belong to
inclusive sampling criteria according to researcher's judgment. The data collection

Objective I – To assess the level of Emotional Intelligence among nursing

staff working in specialized units of selected hospitals of Indore.

The data presented in the table fulfills the objective, clearly indicates that
majority of 34(34%), staff had moderate emotional intelligence, 28(28%) had high
emotional intelligence, 26(26%) had low emotional intelligence and 12(12%) had
poor emotional intelligence. The mean of emotional intelligence score was 66.39 &
S.D. was found to be 17.33.

Objective II- To assess the level of Clinical Performance among nursing

staff working in specialized units of selected hospitals of Indore.

The data presented in the table fulfills the objective, clearly indicates that
majority of 36(36%), had moderate level of performance, 30(30%) had High level

be 14.58.

Objective III - Correlation between level of Emotional Intelligence and

Clinical Performance among nursing staff working in specialized units of
selected hospitals of Indore

Fulfills the objective, In the present study, Karl Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient will
be used as a statistical tool to determine the strength and direction of the relationship
between level of Emotional Intelligence and Clinical Performance among nursing
staff working in specialized units.
Karl Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient (denoted as r) is a widely used parametric test
that measures the degree of linear relationship between two continuous variables. The
value of r ranges from -1 to +1:

In this study karl pearsons coefficient value is r = 0.93, positive correlation is found,
it would suggest that higher levels of Emotional Intelligence are associated with better
Clinical Performance among nursing staff.

The use of Pearson’s correlation is appropriate in this study since both level of
Emotional Intelligence and Clinical Performance are expected to be measured on
continuous or interval/ratio scales, and the data is presumed to be normally
distributed.

CONCLUSION

Thus after the analysis and interpretation of the data, we can conclude that the
hypothesis, H3 - There is significant correlation between level of Emotional
Intelligence and clinical performance of nursing staff working in specialized units of
hospital is being accepted.

The following conclusions were drawn based on the findings of the study.

The data presented in the table fulfills the objective, clearly indicates that
majority of 34(34%), staff had moderate emotional intelligence, 28(28%) had high
emotional intelligence, 26(26%) had low emotional intelligence and 12(12%) had
