Communication is the act of transferring or exchanging information from one place, person or group of
people to another. In other words, it means sharing information or ideas by talking or writing and
receiving information by listening or reading. It is basically an interaction between two or more people.
Communication plays an important role in human life and society. Along with exchanging information
and knowledge, it also helps in building relationships with other people.
Definition of communication
Communication can be defined as the sharing or exchanging of thoughts, opinions, or information by
speech, writing, gestures, listening, etc.
The word “communication” is derived from the word “communis.” Communis is a Latin word, which
means common. The common component in all kinds of interactions and communication is
understanding. Without understanding, there would be no transfer of information or knowledge and the
communication becomes directionless. Communication plays an important role in sharing ideas,
opinions, thoughts and clarifying doubts.
Types Of Communication :-
There are two main types of communication, they are:
1. Verbal communication :-
Verbal communication is known as oral communication, which one person sends a message to another
person or group using speech. Verbal communication also can employ visual aids and non-verbal
elements to support the conveyance of meaning. Therefore, verbal communication is one way for
people to communicate face-to-face and some of the keys component of verbal communication are
sound, words, speaking and language.
Verbal communication is defined as showing your thoughts through words. Some examples of thoughts
are ideas, opinions, directions, dissatisfaction, objections, emotions and pleasures. Verbal
communication is more important than written communication. It is a way to communicate to people
face-to-face. Sound, words, speaking, and language are some of the key components of verbal
communication.

2. Nonverbal communication :-
Non-verbal communication refers to all those messages excluding spoken words. Those messages are
body language such as gesture, facial expressions, eye contact and body posture.
Nonverbal communication include facial expressions, gestures, paralinguistics such as loudness or tone
of voice, body language, proxemics or personal space, eye gaze, haptics and appearance.
Nonverbal communication, also called manual language, is the process of sending and
receiving messages without using words, either spoken or written. Similar to the way that emphasizes
written language, nonverbal behavior may emphasize parts of a verbal message.
In businesses, nonverbal communication plays a crucial role in revealing who we are, plus it also impacts
our interpersonal as well as business relations.

Difference Between Verbal and Non-verbal Communication :-
Verbal communication uses oral or written words whereas non-verbal communication will not use any
kind of written words. Verbal communication is of only two types but, non-verbal is of many types like
audio, visual and silent, etc. Non-verbal is difficult to understand whereas verbal is very easy to
understand. In verbal communication, there is less chance for confusion and misunderstanding than
nonverbal as it is conveyed through wordless cues. The degree of formality is very less in non-verbal
communication and verbal is more formal.
