Turban.
Significance
First of all being punjabi or putting singh after your name doesn't make any
one singh or sikh.
TO become a sikh or sardar first you have to follow rules which are given by our
guru’s
1. Do nitnem everyday
2. Follow and accept 5 K's through which we commits to devote a ‘
sikh way of life'
As per my view, I am so lucky that god have given me a birth in a sikh family
and given me a chance of wearing turban which is similar to a crown, wearing
and respecting turban is not only our responbility, it is our pride which makes us
different from thousands of people and it is our duty to take care of it.
Our tenth guruji sri guru gobind singh sahib ji had converted a normal people to
singhs which was made to fight against evil people and to save the people from
cruel mughal.
All Sikh Gurus since Guru Nanak have worn turbans. However, covering one's
hair with a turban was made an official policy by Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth
Guru of the Sikhs. The main reasons to wear turban are to take care of the
hair, promote equality, and preserve the Sikh identity.
Among the Sikhs, the dastaar is an article of faith that represents honour, self-
respect, courage, spirituality, and piety. The Khalsa Sikh men and women, who
keep the Five k's ( Kesh, Kanga, karha, kachera, kitpan) , wear the turban partly
to cover their long, uncut hair (kesh). The Khalsa Sikhs regard the dastaar as an
important part of the unique Sikh identity.
People who cut their hair with a thought that they will look more cool or good
looking infront of girls.. please stop calling themselves a “sikh” because who
can't take care of a precious thing which has been gifted by a god who sacrifised
their life and their family life for us. and today 99% of people cut their hair only
to impress girls.
Some people were also saying that wearing turban is a
trouble.
To correct them.... please read the follwing points.
1. A Mark of Honor and Respect
The Sikhs or men wearing turbans get more respect and reverence than others.
Turban gives the onlookers an impression of respect and prestige. An automatic
feeling to show regards comes to one’s heart whenever one sees a turbaned
Sikh. A turban has got some sort of spiritual magnetism in it that nobody can
live without saying ‘Sardaarji’ to its very holder.
2. Weather/Pollution Guard
It protects us from the extreme weather conditions like rain, scorching heat
waves, hail storm, snow fall (if any) and many other harsh climatic conditions.
The man without a ‘Turban’ will not be able to find such wonderful protection in
any weather and climatic conditions. Turban also gives a protective shield to the
ears, head and the hair of its holder. As we know that there are many harmful
elements present in our surrounding air which can have serious impact on our
body. But, when a Sikh wears a turban over his head, he gives a kind of pollution
guard to his parts of the body (as mentioned before). During Summer, a turban
keeps the head cool and warm during Winter.
3. Symbol of Royalty or Aristocracy
Turbaned man unlike turban-less man has an aura of aristocracy or Kingman
ship. A man wearing a turban looks like a king or a ruler. Turban adds some
sense of leadership and assertiveness to its holder. One gets psychologically
boosted and spiritually bolstered. It (turban) also gives the holder a feeling of
strength and courage. One when dresses up in a turban, he starts thinking
himself a leader like something. Turban, therefore, is said as a mark of
greatness.
4. A mark of Separate Identity or distinction
A Sikh or anybody wearing a turban is easily spotted from the crowd of people.
Turban, therefore draw a distinction among a crowd of people. A Sikh wearing a
turban gets easily identified in a group. A Sikh gets easily spotted. We find
examples from our day-to-day’s life that a turban wearing man has some
distinction- everyone quickly recognizes him as a Sikh. Turban, also gives the
Sikhs a mark of Separate Identity. ‘Separate Identity’ means that the Sikhs are
totally distinct from the people of other religions- distinct in forms and in their
words, deeds and acts.
5. A Height Enhancer
Turban also adds some height to its holder. People who are short in height,
appears taller when they wear turbans. Turban enhances the height of a person.
6. A Symbol of Masculinity or Machismo
A turban wearing Sikh appears strong, big and masculine. Turban enhances the
personality of the Sikhs multifold. It gives an impression of strength, bravery
and courage. It creates a kind of ‘tenseness’ in the minds of onlookers. People
think him some big and great personality. Moreover, people, while talking to
such turbaned Sikhs, get a feeling of nervousness (as they feel that full caution
should be practiced so that the Sikhs wearing it may not get
irritated/angered/hurt through their uncalled for behavior)
7. Personality Brightener/ Enhancer
A Sikh wearing a turban looks awesomely smart and attractive. The Sikhs with
turbans become a center of attraction (in a positive manner) as everybody gets
magnetized towards them seeing their colorful and stylishly tied turbans. Turban
entirely transforms the personality of a Sikh from a dull-looking one to sparkling
one. A Turban, therefore can be said as a great personality enhancer.
8. Life Saver/Life Guard
Like a helmet on a head, a turban also protects a Sikh from serious bodily injury
during some miss happening on the road. Unlike a helmet, a turban is safer than
it. It gives a sponge like feeling to its holder owing to its multi layers. It can also
be wrapped over the body or the part of the body in case some unstoppable
bleeding is there. Moreover, when somebody is found sinking in water, an
untied-turban can also be used to save the life of that drowning man.
