Sami who is a student in this class works hard to pass the exam.
Who is a student in this class: Relative clause (It starts with the
relative pronoun who)
Relative clause: is a group of words, having subject and verb and
starting with relative pronoun.
Relative Pronouns:
1. Who: People (subject)
2. Whom: People (object)
3. Whose: possession
4. Which: non-humans
5. That: who, whom, which
6. When: time
7. Where: place
Examples:
a. John who is my neighbor is traveling tomorrow.
b. It was last Monday when I met my students. (subject : I; verb:
met)
c. John whose clinic is beside our home is traveling tomorrow.
(Subject: whose clinic; verb: is)
d. The book that is on the table is mine. (Subject: that; Verb : is)
e. This is the library where I met John. (Subject: I; verb: met)
Join the two sentences, changing one of them into a relative clause.
1. Omar is in class today. He is my student.
Omar who is my student is in class today.
2. Sara started a clean-up campaign last month. This campaign is
helping the municipality in my village.
Sara started a clean-up campaign which/that is helping the
municipality in my village last month.
3. Seba reads stories to children. They don’t have access to
electronic libraries.
Seba reads stories to children who/that don’t have access to
electronic libraries.
4. Mira is my student. Her level in English language is good.
Mira is my student whose level in English language is good.
Mira whose level in English language is good is my student.
5. Mira is my student. I met Mira in ENG100 class.
Mira whom/that I met in ENG100 class is my student.
Example:
A role model is a person who makes difference in people’s lives.
A relative clause is an adjective clause because it modifies the
noun or pronoun that comes before/ precedes it.
A role model is someone who makes difference in people’s lives.
