PREFACE
This Islamic Primer presents a study of Islam in an attractive, comprehensive way. Islamic
Primer enables a student to view Islam in all its aspects and to accept it as a way of life. Through
he observes the impact of Islam on life as a whole and does not confine it to just a limited
it,

study of jurisprudence only.

The book guides the student in the various activities of his little world at school, at home
and in the environment around him. A guide to correct behaviour and etiquette in the various
stagesand fields of life, this book moulds the student’s attitude and becomes his trusted com-
panion through his school days in the transitional and delicate period.

This book not only and don’ts but also refines the habits and manners,
presents the do’s
creating a rich and endearing personality. It is an invaluable teaching aid for teachers and
parents too. The success of this book depends considerably on the teacher’s ability to discuss
in depth each concept with the student and ensure that he not only understands it but also
accepts and implements it. The process of learning includes knowing, understanding, accepting
and doing or implementing a concept. The spirit and message of each new fact must permeate
the child’s personality and form his attitude and must also go into his daily life by turning
that concept into action. The teacher must, through her continuous interaction, insist on this
to draw maximum benefit from the book.

A sure key to success, this first book of the series in a graded form and in the child’s
own vocabulary, is a complete course in grooming and etiquette.

To enhance the value of the contents of the book we invite criticism and suggestions from
parents and teachers.

New Delhi, June 1997 Safia Iqbal

TO THE TEACHER

The purpose of this introductory book at the age level of five to six years in Std. I, is

to introduce the child to common Islamic words, terms, basic concepts and morals.

The children in this lower age-group below six are not able to read well. Hence, this book
has less of the written word, more pictures and relies more on the teacher’s oral presentation
of each page. Hence you are advised to turn each page into a lesson and talk at length about
the single word, sentence or idea given on a page.

The book also contains three lessons of questions aAd answers, one for each term. Each
question of these 3 lessons should be turned into a lesson and a talk with a related, supporting
story. Talk lightly about one question for a full period and put up the question and answer
on the blackboard in the last ten minutes of the period for teaching.

Children like toys, bright colours, flowers, sweets and games. They like doing and seeing
new things and playing new games (instead of writing or hearing). You must use these likes
and tendencies of the children to your benefit. Use toys, colourful charts, flowers, sweets, games,
new things and new styles as aids of teaching in every lesson. Make sure you use one aid in
every lesson. That will ensure success for your teaching.

To use an interesting, new teaching aid in every lesson does the trick and works wonders
with a naughty or academically weak class.

Prepare a shining, decorated chart for the lessons PIOUS WORDS in bold letters and
hang it in the classroom. Children love flowers. Draw large flowers and write words like—Allah,
Prophet and other pious words in the centre of the flowers.

on each page along with an aid, read out

After talking to the children about the concept
the lesson loudly and clearly. Then, let the children read the same. Be careful to ensure that
they don’t fall into the deadly trap of rote learning or cramming without understanding.

Turn the I.S. period into a welcome joy and a period of happiness for which they wait.
Do practical work to include some fun-time in it. While teaching the hadees about the mother,
prepare a gift-card with real flowers in it in the class and let each child present this to his parents.

The I.S. period should be kept in the period which is just before recess. The recess is

a joy for children, and to link I.S. with it, creates a happy atmosphere.

There should be no written work or note-book of I.S. The examination should be oral
uptil Std. IV.

The book is framed in such a way that the lessons are naturally divided into 3 parts. The
syllabus for each term ends with a lesson of questions and answers.

Slides and brief video shots may be shown to complement your teaching but not to substi-

tute it. For example, when you plan to teach the word KABAH, you could show a video film
of the Kabah and Haj for just 3 to 5 minutes.

The Islamic Studies teacher must herself present a role-model and example of all that
she teaches as the children are sharply observant. They are impressed quickly. They adopt equally
quickly and unconsciously the teacher’s habits, manners, style and even the tone of talking
and the style of walking. Children copy. So, use this tendency of the children to your benefit
by setting a good example yourself for them to copy.

Insist on the implementation of the morals you teach.
