Foreword
Chandigarh has a very strong and
distinct architectural character.
Unlike most Indian cities, its
history is modernism. With respct
to Residence 239, the architects
wanted to create something different
without taking away the essence
of Chandigarh. However, it was
imperative to add ‘Indianness’ to
the project. An amalgamation of all
of it is what describes this abode.
While the concrete is balanced
out by the warmth of Kota and
Jaisalmer, straight lines and neat
forms juxtapose the asymmetry
seen in the facade. The minimal style
and palllete is balanced out by the
maximalism that personal tastes
bring. Responding marvellously to
the climate and context, this house
stands out while gelling in subtly with
the surroundings.

Residence 239

Project Context
Residence 239 is a beautiful blend of rustic charm and contemporary architecture, nestled on a
magnificent 6000-square-foot site. This concept aims to design a home that not only blends in with
Imagery ©2023 Airbus, CNES / Airbus, Landsat / Copernicus, Maxar Technologies, Map data ©2023 500 m
its surroundings but also maximizes the infusion of natural light. The goal is to create a living area
that reflects nature’s tranquility while yet providing modern conveniences.

10 11
www.buildofy.com Residence 239 | Design 360

Ground Floor
The ground floor is designed in an open plan layout where each space seamlessly blends and takes
one around the whole floor. Comprised mostly of social and semi social spaces, the ground floor has
double-height spaces, gathering spaces and a fresh tropical vibe to it.

12 13
www.buildofy.com Residence 239 | Design 360

Living Room
A double-height living area serves as a major focal point that reflects the heart of the architectural
philosophy. This area serves as the house’s nucleus, a place where design, usefulness, and aesthetics
all come together in perfect harmony. As you enter this space, your gaze is attracted upward to
a chandelier that delicately hangs from the ceiling. This vertical connection extends beyond the
immediate space, visually connecting the ground floor with the upper floors of the residence and
creating a sense of continuity throughout.

14 15

16 17
www.buildofy.com Residence 239 | Design 360

Dining Room
The dining space adjoining the living area is a double-height space that becomes the focal point
of the house. It becomes a space to gather and socialise with guests even if someone is in the
neighboring spaces. Antique furniture design and a bright rustic fabric highlight the dining space
further. The space is defined by a Kota Stone flooring, making it a distinguished space that goes
unnoticed.

18 19

20 21
www.buildofy.com Residence 239 | Design 360

Kitchen
The Kitchen is a fairly simple and minimalist space. With basic utilities and appliances, the design
of the kitchen is majorly functional. A breakfast table is placed between the kitchen and the living
room making it a socialising space or a space for a quick morning breakfast. Wooden surfaces and
high chairs make it a perfect space for connecting with the occupants sitting in the living room.

22 23

24 25
www.buildofy.com Residence 239 | Design 360

Family Room
A family room on the ground floor is a defined private space for the family members to gather and
spend leisurely time together. It has a tropical theme with wooden floors and furniture in shades of
green. It is a perfect space to enjoy a movie night with the family on weekends.

26 27
www.buildofy.com Residence 239 | Design 360

Staircase
A very interesting staircase sits in the centre of the house. Its, almost like an amphitheatre that
becomes another space to gather and socialise. Half of the staircase made in Kota stone and the
other half made in steel, the staircase is a perfect balance of solid and light structure. It is flooded
with natural light thanks to the skylight overhead. The design of the glass and concrete louvers
of the skylight ensure the staircase and the space below do not heat up at any time of the day.
The courtyard and skylight over the staircase ensure sunlight inside the house throughout the day,
creating interesting skiagraphy on wall surfaces.
