The Crying Stone
Once upon a time in West Kalimantan lived an old widow with a
beautiful daughter called Darmi. Since Darmi’s father died, their lives
became difficult, so the mother had to work hard the whole day.
Darmi was a spoiled and lazy girl. She just admired her beauty in
front the mirror. Whatever her request should be granted. She did not
want to help her mother make a living. Every her mother asked her to
work to the fields, she always refused.
"Child! Come help me working in the fields." invited the mother.
"What? Working in the field? No! If I work in the fields my nails will be dirty
and my skin will be dark!" refused Darmi.
"Aren’t you sorry to see me, my daughter?" pleaded the mother.
"No! and Never! It’s your obligation to work in the fields!" replied Darmi
rudely.
Hearing her daughter, the mother could not say anything. She went
to the field with sadness
One day Darmi asked her mother to buy cosmetics in the market.
But the mother did not know which cosmetics Darmi purpose. Then the
mother invited Darmi to go together
“Mother, buy me cosmetics.” ordered Darmi.
“Cosmetics? I don’t know the cosmetics you mean, let’s go together with
me my daughter.” offered the mother happily.
“Hah? Going with you? Hmmmm…… ok I will come with you. But, you
must walk behind me! Because I’m so ashamed.” refused Darmi.
“Why are you ashamed? I am your mother.” surprised the mother.
“Look yourself! Your face is wrinkle and your clothes are dirty!” mocked
Darmi
How sad the mother hearing that, but even Darmi always mocked
her mother, she never hated and obeyed to walk behind her daughter.
Both mother and daughter looked so much different. Darmi looked pretty
with a glamour dress, while her mother looked very old with dirty clothes.
Along the way, Darmi met a boy from another village
“Hi, beautiful. What is your name?”.
“Mmm, Hi. I’m Darmi”.
“Oh, Darmi. As beautiful as the person.” Said the man.
“Thank you”.
"Where are you going beautiful?" asked the boy.
"Mmm, I’m going to the market." replied Darmi.
“Ohh, by the way who is behind you? Is she your mother?” asked the man
curiously.
“hmmm No! certainly no!. She isn’t my mother, she is… just my servant.”
pretended Darmi.
Like lightning structed the mother’s heart hearing Darmi’s words.
The mother stopped walking and Darmi asked
"Hey mother, what are you doing? why are you stopping there? let’s
go” asked Darmi worriedly.
“Mother, mother! Let’s go!. Don’t just sit there!”.
Darmi asked her mother many times, but the mother didn’t answer
at all. In a moment, Darmi saw her mother saying something.
“Oh Lord, please forgive this weak mother. This mother couldn’t teach a
good attitude to her daughter. Give her a good lesson! Punish my
daughter! Punish her! I curse you to be a stone!”.
Suddenly the skies started became dark and the thunder shouted so
hard. Slowly Darmi turned into a stone
“Mother, what happens with me? I can’t move my legs. Hey mother help
me! Don’t be just silent there! Mother! Mother!”
When Darmi’s body started to turn into a stone, Darrmi realized all
her mistakes
“Mother forgive me, I know I am wrong and I have so many mistakes…..
but please help me mother....and please forgive me…. what is this
mother? I don’t want…. it hurts me mother…. I’ll do whatever you want,
but. please mother please forgive me”
However it’s too late to say sorry because Darmi had turned into a
stone. Now, people in West Kalimantan called it “The Crying Stone”.
The moral lesson is:
Let’s love our parents the whole of our life
