EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
General Objectives of Investigation: The seepe of work was to complete a geotechnical investigation
for "Geotechnical Investigation and detail design Engineering in connection with third line along with
Electrification (OHE and General Electrification works) and S&T works of lanjigarh road (Ex)-
Jhimiripeta (107.5 K.m) in connection with 3rd line between VZM.SBP on waltair and Sambalpur
Divisions of East Coast Railway in the State of Odisha, India (Bridge No.536)"..This report presents the
results of the site investigation and geotechnical calculations related to the project.
Fieldwork and Laboratory Testing: The drilling of 1 no. of borehole was conducted althe proposed
site. Field lesting was 'conducted and samples (soil) were collected during drilling. Field standard
penetration tests (SPT) were conducted in Ihe boreholes dunng drilling. Laboratory lests on collected
soil samples were conducted at our NABL accredited laboralory in Bhubaneswar. These tests include
grain size dislributions, DFS, Atterberg's limits, specific gravity. shear strength parameier & Moisture
content of soil sample.
Geotechnical Foundation Report: A general descriplion of Ihe sub-strata encountered at sile during
boring, geotechnical properties of Ihe sub-slrata and availability of ground-water levels are provided in
this report. The calculations of safe bearing capacity with respect to permissible settlement of the sub-
slrata are included in the report.

1.0. INTRODUCTION
This report presents results of Sub.soil Exploration work for Geotechnical Investigation and delail
design Engineering in connection with third line along with Electrification (OHE and General
Electrification works) and S&T works of Lanjigarh road (Ex)-Jhimiripeta (107.5 K.mJ in
connection with 3" line between VZM-SBP on wallair and Samba/pur Divisions of East Coast
Railway in the State of Odisha, India (Bridge No.536). This work was penormed by
S.M.Consultants , Bhubaneswar as requisitioned by Chief Project Manager _It ,Rail Vikas Nigam
limited.
2.0. PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF SERVICES
The purpose of Ihe current geotechnicai investigation was 10 explore and determine the existing sub.
strata conditions such as stratification. denseness or hardness of the strata, position of ground water
lable at Ihe iocation etc. and 10 evaluate approximale range of safe bearing capacily for the proposed
structure (Bridge No-536) using empirical formulas provided in the reievanllS codes.
The scope of lJ1ework inc/uded as follows:
• Marking of bore hole location points
• Drilling of one numbers of bore hole up to the required depth below the respective eXisling ground
level in order to know the sub surface stratification, conducting necessary field lests and collection
of sub-strala samples for laboralory testing.
• Testing of soil samples in Ihe laboratory to determine its physical and engineering properties and
analyzing all field and laboratory data to evaluale bearing capacity of the sub-strata for given
foundationsizes.
• Calculationsof safe bearing capacily of the sub-slrala with respect to permeable se

3.0. FIELD INVESTIGATION PROGRAM
Field investigation work was carried out in accordance with IS: 1892 -1979(Reaffirmed 2016).
Field works include
► Boring in the sub-strata by Rotary Drilling Method.
► Conducting SPT in soil as per IS: 2131-1981(Reaffirmed 2016) and collection of SPT samples.
► Collection of disturbed samples from bore holes.
3.1. Present Site Condition:
Bore holes were conducted for a proposed structure (Bridge).Total 1 no of BH was conducted
whose average of R.L. is(+) 362.076 m.
3.2. Methodology of Investigation:
By using rotary drilling rigs, the boreholes were progressed up to 10.0 m depth. Rotary method
of boring is most widely used method of advancing a boreholes. This method along with use of drilling
mud to stabilize the side of the borehole is likely to give the least disturbance to soils beneath the base
of the borehole and permit taking near to truly undisturbed samples. Diameter of boreholes was 150
mm. Where caving of boreholes occurred, casings were used to keep the boreholes stable.
Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) were conducted in the boreholes alternate to UDS. By
connecting a split spoon sampler to 'A' rods and driving it by 45 cm using a 63.5 kg hammer falling
freely from a height of 75 cm. The tests were conducted in accordance with IS: 2131-1981 (Reaffirmed
2016).
. - Number of blows required for each 15 cm penetration of the split spoon sampler was recorded.
First 15 cm penetration is ignored. The cumulative no. of blows required to penetrate the rest 30cm of
the 45cm sampling interval is reported as the SPT value (N value).
