The British Museum

A wonderful event happened in 2009: The British Museum celebrated its 250th birthday. Since 1759, when it opened,
the museum has brought things from all over the world, which are carefully kept and shown to the public. These objects
are from people around the world who have made them over the centuries. The first exhibition was organized by Sir
Hans Sloane, a doctor whose love for nature and art began when he spent some lovely time in the West Indies, as he
explains in his book about the history of Jamaica.
Sloane used most of his money on fantastic trips far from home where he got unusual objects for the museum. He
clearly wanted to make sure that, for a low price, everybody could see what he thought were the most wonderful things
he collected from other countries. Today's exhibition includes some of the most famous objects from around the world.
They're organized in several huge rooms where visitors always look for explanations with the latest information about
those cultural groups and future events; sometimes visitors must pay for special exhibitions.
The museum's goals today are to be the center of international cultural studies and to teach people about world
cultures. To do this, there are interesting exhibitions and excellent courses on culture. University students are also
invited to become full members, which allows them to enter to the museum's library.

Machines have been used to replace the work done by people for thousands of years. This immediately
led to the creation of new jobs when the machines needed to be fixed. Our creativity allows us to invent
machines for progress. Therefore, we use them to make new things, solve new problems and produce
whole industries that we never before imagined.

In the case of employment, machines may bring more benefits than challenges. Indeed, humans will
always find a way to create machines that perform like people and replace them. For instance, I can
play chess matches against a computer or use an elevator without an operator. In spite of the fact that
some jobs can be replaced by machines, the good news is that they also free us from dull duties,
allowing us to be more original and efficient─ although of course one person being "liberated" is another
person who becomes "unemployed," at least in the short term.

Human ambition is the key to keeping up with mechanization, and not doing that worries me far more
than electronic robots that perform in the same way as employees. The huge increase in productivity
that machines provide must be recognized as an advantage and it should not be ignored. We're very
talented at developing programs and at training machines to do our former jobs - so the solution is to
keep inventing new ones. The only job security for humans is to advance into the new and the unknown.

41. What is the writer doing in the article?

A. encouraging readers to search for challenging jobs

B. mentioning the advantages of machines for job searching
C. sharing information about the disadvantages of machines for humans
D. discussing some challenges and advantages of machines in human productivity

42. What can a reader find out from paragraph 1?

A. Machines are creative.

B. Machines benefit humans.
C. Machines cause problems.
D. Machines fix human errors.

43. Playing a chess match against a computer is an example of

A. the negative effect of machines for employers.

B. helping people get rid of their boring jobs.

45. What would be the general idea of the article?

B.

can be replaced

C.
As machines replace jobs, other jobs
should be invented

D.
New machines and programs must be

Evelyn Smith
Evelyn Smith was a pilot. Her father, David, had an important company in
Kansas, USA, where she was born. They later moved to Texas with her
Californian mother, and there Evelyn grew up with her younger sister, Helen,
who became a painter and also wrote for a newspaper there. Evelyn got
interested in airplanes there when she was 20. Her uncle Jim, who was a
mechanic, took her to a fair. They both got on an airplane and he flew it while
she was sitting next to him. That's when she first knew she wanted to learn to
fly!

Evelyn later traveled to Toronto, Canada, where she helped to sell medicines for sick people. In 1919,
she returned to the USA and got into medical school in Philadelphia. Then, she moved to Sacramento,
where she learned how to fly, along with her cousin, who sang and played popular music. During their
training, Evelyn once saw a plane catch fire, but she wasn't frightened.

In 1922, Evelyn bought an airplane thanks to some money that her father lent her. Two years later, she
moved to Pasadena, where her best friend helped her find a job. During this time, she was able to keep
flying as a hobby.

In May 1932, Evelyn flew from Hampton, USA, and after many hours she arrived in England, becoming

Does something about living abroad seem extraordinary to you? I understand. That’s what inspired me to leave
America for the first time and set out on my journey to start high school in France. However, I was shocked that
there were several things I had absolutely no idea about until I landed in France and took part in daily activities
there.

Before I arrived, I had only experienced foreign exchange students coming to America, never being one. All
those students spoke other languages unknown to me. For me, as an English speaker, that was not the case.
Once in France, most of my foreign partners spoke English. In some ways, it's positive that people communicate
with you in your own language because it's convenient. The disadvantage is you never have that secret moment
where you can say things, and no one can imagine what you're saying.

It will feel shocking to install yourself in a new family's house, but you can handle this. As you start getting along
with them, you can start doing things the way you like them, and it gets cozy. However, there are some things
you can't do your usual way. It's those little things that separate your life in your home country from your life
abroad.

If you're thinking about doing this, my advice is "say yes more than you say no." Of course, there will be times
when it is acceptable to say no, but if you're turning down a weekend of excitement with classmates or your
family there, you're not taking advantage of your exchange. Part of the reason you are living this adventure is to
experience things. Say yes and you will not be disappointed.

81. What is the writer doing in this text?

A. convincing people of the benefits to study foreign languages in France.

B. warning exchange students about the culture shock they may deal with.
C. informing students about what he learned after being in an exchange program.
D. encouraging French people to discover what being an international student is like.

82. What can the reader find out about the writer in paragraph 1?

A. He had a good time studying high school in this hometown.

B. He ignored several issues about life in France before his arrival.
C. He had traveled abroad before his departure to France.
D. He had many unbelievable experiences during his stay in America.

83. In paragraph 2, when talking about his own language, the author means that

The Empire State Building

The Empire State Building is the top place to see for first-time visitors to New York City. This tall
building was part of a competition between New York City businessmen Walter Chrysler and John
Raskob for the construction of the world’s tallest building. Engineer William Lamb was paid to produce
the plans for the buildings, and John Raskob and Pierre du Pond's company paid for the Empire State
project.

The other project in competition for the title, 40 Wall Street, was under construction when work on
the Empire State Building began on March 17, 1930. The Empire State project was completed on April
11, 1931, sooner than planned. The building was opened for business by Herbert Hoover on May 1,
1931. However, due to the great economic crisis of that time, lots of the offices in the building were
not rented for several years.

When visiting the Empire State Building, prepare for long ticket lines on the first floor, especially on
weekends. You should wear warm clothes if it's cold and windy, so check the temperature before you
go. Tourists buy one ticket to visit the 86th floor and another one for the 102nd floor, which offers
interesting 360-degree views of the city. Book your tickets online to save money. To go up to the
higher floor, tickets are only available on the 80th floor, where you can learn about the history of the
building.
