Galaxy 3000 Single Line
True On-Line Double Conversion Topology

Double Conversion Advantages

w True isolation between the input and output
w Independence of the input and output voltages and frequency
w No-break transfer to battery or bypass power
w No reliance on batteries for frequency stabilization

Double Conversion True On-Line

Technology Line Interactive Technology
Fault Tolerant Circuitry
Manages faults without compromising the UPS

w Output faults are relatively common over the life of any electrical system –
will your UPS be able to handle them?
w No matter what the overload capacity of the inverter (i.e. 150% or 300% it’s
not enough to handle output faults which range from around 600% to infinite
current.
w Only the utility has enough power to clear most output faults safely (usually
will have 100 times + the fault clearing current of the UPS module).
w The Galaxy 3000’s inverter’s fast current limiting response protects it from
damage while safely allowing the utility to safely clear the fault via the robust
Galaxy 3000 with 150% rated
static bypass switch
fast current limiting inverter and
> (no matter how much overload fully rated transfer switch.

w Other UPS may suffer fatally from output shorts as the inverter may self
destruct if it can not current and transfer to bypass safely

and slower transfer switch.
Fault Tolerant Circuitry
How fault tolerant circuitry works

w Fault tolerant circuitry relies on two critical features

> Inverter is fast enough to current limit (switch off) and
avoid being overloaded by excessive fault currents

> Static transfer switch can sustain enough current to

clear the fault with out damage
DPQ [Digital Power Quality]
The heart of MGEs performance advantage

w Output created from hundreds of variable width

pulses (Pulse Width Modulation)
w Control Loop compares output to a references
sine wave and makes adjustments or correction
pulses to maintain a “power quality envelope”

Real Time Reference Sine Wave Precision voltage regulation
Fast Switching Frequency Superior step load performance
DPQ Advantages
Load Surge Management

w Step loads or load surges common in just about all applications

Devices with high start-up surges
> i.e. starting distribution transformers, starting banks of
servers, starting motor loads (chillers), medical imaging
equipment w IT equipment (switch mode power
> UPSs not capable of sustaining stable voltage during supplies)
step loads can compromise the load by decaying the
voltage under quick load changes w Medical imaging equipment
> Most manufacturers quote <5% on specifications but w Distribution transformers
some may not be true . w Motor loads
w Fluorescent Lighting

IT FACT: starting up one bank of

servers can cause power surges
equal to the rating of a 30 kVA UPS
and may decay your UPS voltage.
DPQ Advantages
Active Harmonic Cancellation

w Harmonics are reflected by most loads

(especially IT loads) and pollute the
critical bus
w MGEs inverter technology recognizes the
harmonics and produces correction
pulses at a high enough resolution to
cancel harmonics
w The result is that the critical bus THD is
limited to 3.5% avoiding problems
associated with high THD

Clean Distortion Free Input Power
IGBT Rectifier Advantages
w Eliminates harmful distortion that is reflected back onto the utility from the UPS from disturbing sensitive
equipment sharing the utility power

Input Power Factor Correction
IGBT Rectifier Advantages

Input PFC (Power-factor correction) is achieved by

using a three-phase IGBT rectifier that draws a
sinusoidal input current, in phase with the voltage.
THDI < 3% (current total harmonic distortion, input
side)
w PF > 0.99 (power factor)
w No special installation precautions (i.e. oversized
neutral cables)
w No risk of harmonic problems for existing
installations (harmonics from UPS will not disturb
other loads sharing utility power)
w No bulky, expensive input filters required
w Total compatibility with an generators, even for
low loads
w Current consumption reduced by up to 20%,
allowing smaller upstream breakers, transformers
and cables
Generator Friendly Technology
IGBT Rectifier Advantages
w The Galaxy incorporates all the essential features for perfect
generator UPS compatibility

> Super wide frequency and voltage input range (<25%)

– Generator voltage often drops when first loaded; the wide
input range means the UPS won’t transfer to battery

> No leading power factor

– Generators can be forced off-line if the load (i.e. the UPS)
power factor becomes too leading

> Ultra low input THD

– Generator run cooler when distortion is lower
Less generator over sizing
> Smallest UPS to generator ratio in the industry
– Generators typically have to be oversized (often two or means significant cost
three times that of the UPS rating) to safely operate with a savings!
UPS – The Galaxy 3000 does not require significant
oversizing

> No reliance on battery battery power to regulate frequency

like Delta Conversion® technology!
– The Galaxy 3000 does not have to rely on battery power
(which reduces battery life) to maintain frequency
regulation when on generator power
Graphical User Interface

Safe, easy operation…

w Operator error is the number one reason UPS
reliability is compromised!
w Galaxy 3000’s operator interface simplifies
operation so much, even first time users can
proceed with confidence
w Displays include:

- alarm / event logs

- battery usage history
- animated power flow diagrams
- phase balancing
- operator instructions
- power graphs

Batteries that last…
Better managed batteries for a more reliable UPS

w Intermittent Charging Technology (only MGE)

> Uses intermittent cycles to maintain battery charge vs. a constant float
charge
> Avoids the constant strain and deterioration caused by constant float
charging
> Dramatically reduces premature battery failures that are the leading
cause UPS reliability issues
> Increases life of batteries by up to 50% (huge cost savings)
