Cylinder head instructions

Cylinder head

Use new bolts.

Do not remove bolt coating.

Lightly coat contact surfaces between bolt head, washer and cylinder head (use oil).
Tighten bolts 1-10 (M11) in the following stages:
1. 30 Nm
2. 90°
3. 180°
Timing chain housing bolts:
M8 x 40 = 19 Nm

Use new nuts/bolts.

Sump bolts

Apply a 2,0-2,5 mm diameter bead of Loctite 5970 or equivalent to sump fig1178550.A.

Assemble components within 10 minutes. Wait 25 minutes before starting engine to allow sealant to dry. Excess
sealant can cause engine damage.

Tighten bolts in the following stages fig1175535:


1. 2-20 = Hand tighten
2. 1 (sump to transmission) = Hand tighten
3. 2-20 = 24 Nm
4. 1 (sump to transmission) = 19 Nm

Ensure M8 x 40 bolt is installed in location shown, otherwise transmission damage may occur fig1231049.A.

Starter motor bolts:

Use new nuts/bolts.

Clutch pressure plate 15 Nm+90°

Crankshaft pulley/damper bolts

If crankshaft pulley is removed, always install new crankshaft oil seal.

Do NOT lubricate crankshaft oil seal. Do NOT touch sealing lip.

Use new bolts.


Vibration damper to crankshaft - 4 bolts (M10):
1. 28 Nm
2. 180°

01.01.2017→: Oil control valve with M21 thread (multi-spline head):
1. 10 Nm

Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor 14 Nm
Lambda sensor (Oxygen) 50 Nm

Lambda sensor (Oxygen)

Coat threads with high temperature lubricant (BMW part No. 83-23-2-158-852).

High temperature lubricant must not enter slots on lambda sensor.

Knock sensor (KS) 22 Nm


Engine oil pressure switch 22 Nm
Oil filter

Oil filter

Lubricate seal contact surface.


Tighten in the following stages:
1. 25 Nm
2. Slacken off 180°
3. 25 Nm
Oil filter drain plug:
1. Use new drain plug.
2. 5 Nm

Chassis tightening torques

Front hub 210 Nm+90°

Use new bolts.

Front hub - wheel bearing housing bolts

Use new bolts.


M12 x 1,25 x 45 = 120 Nm + 90°
M12 x 1,5 x 45 = 80 Nm + 90°

Ensure wheel bearing is used with the correct bolts to prevent damage to wheel bearing.

Rear hub 4x4=210 Nm+90°

Use new bolts.

Rear hub - wheel bearing housing bolts 100 Nm+90°

Use new bolts.

Use new bolts.

Steering rack/box mounting 100 Nm+45°

Brake disc to hub Front 16 Nm

Use new bolts.

Brake caliper to carrier Front 35 Nm

Use new bolts.

Brake caliper/carrier to hub Front 110 Nm

Use new bolts.

Brake disc to hub Rear 16 Nm

Use new bolts.

Brake caliper to carrier Rear 30 Nm

Use new bolts.

Brake caliper/carrier to hub Rear 30 Nm+90°

Use new bolts.

Back plate to hub Rear 12 Nm

Use new bolts.

ABS sensor Front 8 Nm

Use new bolts.

ABS sensor Rear 12 Nm

Use new bolts.

Road wheels 140 Nm
