1 Wash your hands. Open the packet taking 1
sterile precautions
2 Pour all the powder from one sachet of ORS 1
into a clean container that will hold at least
one litre of water.
3 Pour 1L of boiled and then cooled water 1
available into the container
4 Stir till all the powder in the container has 1
been mixed with water & none remain at the
bottom of the container
Explain to the mother
5 Give to your child as much as he/she drinks 2
by spoon or cup.
Give after each motion and in between also.
Watch for signs of dehydration. If baby
deteriorates consult doctor
6 Discard the unused solution after 24 hours 1

7 Sodium chloride, Potassium chloride are 1
used to correct the Na+, K+ and Cl- loss
respectively
8 Glucose is added as it facilitates Na+ 1
reabsorption (Glucose coupled Na+
Cotransport system is functional). Glucose
also provides nutrition.
9 Sodium citrate is used to correct acidosis 1
