Sustainability Inquiry & Investigation program on United


Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 - Clean Water &
Sanitation conducted by IUCEE Foundation from October –
December 2022.
A program designed to incorporate sustainability ideas into engineering education is the Indo-
US Collaboration for Engineering Education (IUCEE) Sustainability Program. Its main
objective is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations,
highlighting the vital role that engineering plays in tackling global issues. The goal of the
IUCEE Sustainability Program is to help teachers and students in engineering have a different
perspective by motivating them to solve problems with sustainability in mind. The
program aims to inculcate a comprehensive awareness of sustainability principles and
practices across engineering disciplines through curriculum upgrades, faculty development
workshops, and student involvement activities.
Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation: Access to clean water and sanitation is fundamental to
human well-being and sustainable development. IUCEE's Sustainability Program supports
research and education initiatives aimed at developing innovative water treatment
technologies, improving water resource management practices, and enhancing access to safe
drinking water and sanitation facilities, thereby contributing to the goal of ensuring clean
water and sanitation for all.
INTRODUCTION:
Clean water and sanitation are fundamental pillars of public health and sustainable
development. Clean water refers to water that is free from pollutants, contaminants, and
harmful microorganisms, making it safe for consumption and use. Sanitation, on the other
hand, encompasses the management of human waste, ensuring its safe disposal to prevent the
spread of diseases.
Access to clean water and sanitation is essential for promoting good health, preventing
waterborne diseases, and enhancing overall well-being. Unfortunately, millions of people
around the world still lack access to these basic necessities, leading to numerous health
challenges and hindering socio-economic development.
Efforts to improve clean water and sanitation involve a combination of infrastructure
development, policy initiatives, and community engagement. This includes the construction
of water treatment facilities, distribution networks, and sanitation systems, as well as the
implementation of hygiene education programs to promote proper water usage and waste
management practices.
Achieving universal access to clean water and sanitation is a key target of the United Nations
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By addressing these issues comprehensively,
communities can enhance their resilience to environmental threats, reduce poverty, and
promote healthier and more sustainable lifestyles for future generations.

CHALLENGES TO BE ADDRESSED:

Several challenges need to be addressed to ensure universal access to clean water and
sanitation:
1. Lack of Infrastructure: Many regions, particularly in rural areas and informal settlements,
lack adequate infrastructure for clean water supply and sanitation. Building and maintaining
water treatment plants, distribution networks, and sanitation facilities require significant
investment and technical expertise.
2. Water Scarcity: Water scarcity, exacerbated by factors such as population growth,
urbanization, and climate change, poses a significant challenge to accessing clean water.
Competition for limited water resources can lead to conflicts and inequalities in water
distribution, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions.
3. Water Pollution: Pollution from industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, and improper
waste disposal contaminates water sources, making them unsafe for consumption. Addressing
water pollution requires effective regulation, pollution prevention measures, and investment
in wastewater treatment infrastructure.
4. Sanitation Crisis: Millions of people worldwide lack access to basic sanitation facilities,
such as toilets and sewage systems, leading to open defecation and the spread of diseases.
Improving sanitation infrastructure and promoting proper waste management practices are
essential to address this crisis.
5. Inequitable Access: Access to clean water and sanitation services is often unequal, with
marginalized communities, including women, children, and people living in poverty,
disproportionately affected. Addressing inequities in access requires targeted interventions,
community engagement, and policies that prioritize the needs of vulnerable populations.
6. Climate Change Impacts: Climate change exacerbates water-related challenges, including
increased frequency and severity of droughts, floods, and storms. Adapting water and
sanitation infrastructure to changing climate conditions and implementing sustainable water
management practices are critical to building resilience.
7. Funding and Financing: Insufficient funding and limited financial resources pose barriers
to implementing water and sanitation projects, particularly in low-income countries.
Mobilizing domestic and international financing, improving financial management practices,
and exploring innovative financing mechanisms are essential to bridge funding gaps.
8. Behavioral and Cultural Factors: Promoting behavior change and overcoming cultural
barriers are essential for ensuring the adoption of proper hygiene practices and sanitation
behaviors. Effective communication, community engagement, and culturally sensitive
approaches are necessary to address these factors.
9. Conflict and Fragility: Conflict-affected and fragile states face additional challenges in
providing access to clean water and sanitation due to damaged infrastructure, displacement of
populations, and disrupted service delivery. Ensuring humanitarian assistance, peacebuilding
efforts, and long-term development initiatives incorporate water and sanitation components is
essential in these contexts.
Addressing these challenges requires coordinated efforts from governments, civil society
organizations, the private sector, and the international community, with a focus on
sustainable and inclusive solutions that prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable
populations.
SOLUTIONS:
Addressing the challenges of clean water and sanitation requires a multifaceted approach
involving various stakeholders at local, national, and international levels. Here are some key
solutions:
1. Investment in Infrastructure: Building and maintaining water treatment plants, distribution
networks, and sanitation facilities is crucial. This includes installing piped water systems,
wells, water purification systems, and sewage treatment plants to ensure access to clean water
and proper waste management.
2. Promotion of Hygiene Education: Educating communities about the importance of
handwashing, proper sanitation practices, and water conservation is essential. Hygiene
education programs can empower individuals to adopt behaviors that prevent the spread of
waterborne diseases and promote overall health and well-being.
3. Community Participation and Engagement: Involving communities in the planning,
implementation, and maintenance of water and sanitation projects fosters a sense of
ownership and ensures sustainability. Community-led initiatives can also identify local
priorities and tailor solutions to meet specific needs.
4. Policy and Governance: Developing and enforcing policies and regulations related to water
quality, sanitation standards, and environmental protection is crucial. Effective governance
frameworks can ensure equitable access to clean water and sanitation services while
promoting accountability and transparency.
5. Innovation and Technology: Embracing innovative technologies such as water purification
systems, water-saving devices, and sustainable sanitation solutions can improve efficiency
and effectiveness. Research and development in water and sanitation technology can lead to
cost-effective solutions suitable for diverse contexts.
6. Cross-Sectoral Collaboration: Collaboration between government agencies, non-profit
organizations, private sector entities, and international donors can leverage resources,
expertise, and networks to address complex water and sanitation challenges more effectively.

7. Climate Resilience: Climate change poses additional challenges to water and sanitation

extreme weather events. Investing in climate-resilient infrastructure and adaptation measures

By implementing these solutions in a coordinated and holistic manner, societies can make
significant progress towards achieving universal access to clean water and sanitation,
improving public health outcomes, and promoting sustainable development.

Activity 3:

Energy Literacy Training (AICTE + ESF G20 initiative for


“Youth Action for Climate Correction”)
The climate is not changing, it has changed, mainly due to use of energy. Knowingly or
unknowingly we tend to mis-use, over-use and inefficiently-use energy and contribute more
to climate change.
Every user of energy should become Energy Literate. All India Council for Technical
Education (AICTE), in collaboration with Energy Swaraj Foundation have launched Energy
Literacy Training. In this training one learns about energy generation, consumption and its
impact on the environment. You can also learn how to reduce your energy needs and how one
can switch to solar energy 100%. The training consists of 12 modules of about 15 minutes
each and can be done easily within 3 to 4 hours.
On successful completion of training, everyone gets a certificate of Energy Literacy with the
logo of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Each affiliated organization can
add their own logo as well on certificates.
INTRODUCTION

Types of Energy:

2. Renewable Energy: Renewable energy sources are derived from naturally replenishing

Plastic Awareness Program


Introduction:
The Plastic Awareness Program was initiated with the aim of raising awareness about the

this program, paper bags were made and distributed to friends and acquaintances to encourage
the use of eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastics. This report provides an overview of
the program, details of the paper bag distribution activity, and its potential impact on
reducing plastic consumption.

The Plastic Awareness Program was inspired by growing concerns about the detrimental
effects of plastic pollution on the environment, wildlife, and human health. The program

herbs like mint, rosemary, and sage. Native to the Indian subcontinent, Tulsi is widely
cultivated for its medicinal properties, culinary uses, and religious significance.

Medicinal Properties:

Tulsi, or Holy Basil, possesses a wide range of medicinal properties that have been
recognized and utilized in traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda for centuries. Here's a
list of some of the well-documented medicinal properties of Tulsi:
