• About the poem / poet and the title :- Song of the open
road is a poem by Walt Whitman. It is taken from the collection "Leaves of
Grass". It is written in 1856. It is an inspirational poem written in the form of
narration. Walt Whitman was an American poet, essayist and journalist. He is
often called the father of free verse. His poem 'O' Captain, My Captain' and his
poetry collection 'Leaves of Grass' are his remarkable literary works.
• The theme :- Freedom, joy of free life and optimism are the major
themes of this poem. Throughout the poem, the poet encourages the readers
to be true to themselves and live a free and enjoy the freedom of life. Although
his life is not free from obligations and troubles, he encourages everyone to
live their dreams, leaving the obstacles behind.
• Poetic style :- Whitman separates his poem into four separate
stanzas. With the exception of the first stanza, which contains only three lines,
the other stanzas contain four lines of verse. The poem utilizes free verse; the
lines are unrhymed. Figures of speech such as Alliteration, Metaphor,
Repetition and Paradox are impressive.

Appreciation of the “Indian Weavers”

• About the poem / poet and the title :- Sarojini Naidu is
known as the Nightingale of India because of her poetry. ‘Indian Weavers’ is a
short poem written by Sarojini Naidu. The poem depicts the three types of
garment. The weavers weave at three particulars times of a day. The first
stanza of the poem represents the birth, the second stanza represents youth
and the last stanza death. These are the three important events in human life.
• The theme :- the cycle of life is the theme of the poem. It also
highlights the skills of Indian weavers. Poem explains three important events of
life i.e birth, marriage, and death. Different clothes and colours indicate
different moods.
• Poetic style/ device / language :- The poem is divided in
three stanzas of 4 lines each. The first line rhymes with the second, and the
third line with the fourth line in each stanza. The poem is in a question answer
format. The language of the poem is of everyday use. The use of poetic devices

Appreciation of the “Inchcape Rock”

• About the poem / poet and the title :- The poem' the
Inchcape Rock' written by a British poet Robert Southey. The poem is about
some treacherous rocks near the coast of Scotland. The title of the poem is
very suitable because the rock is a focal point of the whole poem.
• The theme :- The central theme of the poem runs around the
proverb ' As you sow, so shall you reap'. It is about the evil feeling of jealousy.
Abbot put the Inchcape Bell on a bouy to warn ships during storms. But Ralph,
a character in the poem is an example of jealousy that he doesn't like the
Abbot blessed by the sailors and wants to trouble him. So he cut the Bell. At
the end of the poem he himself falls in the pit dig by himself. When he sails
towards the Scotland the weather changes and due to the stormy sea he can't
see the secure place or coast to land. And at last he hears the sound of the
ringing the knell.

of ballad. It tells a story. The poem is dramatic and narrative. There are
seventeen stanzas of four lines each. The poem follows the rhyme scheme

Appreciation of the “Father returning
home” poem
• About the poem / poet and the title :- The title of the
poem is 'FATHER RETURNING HOME' taken from “travelling in a cage”.
It is an autobiographical poem. This poem is written by 'DILIP CHITRE'.
He was celebrated as bilingual poet. He was a translator with a remarkable
work in Marathi and English. This poem shows generation gap between
father and his children.
• The theme :- Isolation, Alienation is the theme of this poem. When
the father comes home after a tiring day at work, there is no one to care for
him or engage him in conversation. His tragedy is not unique but one that is
seen commonly in big cities. In this teeming city he is friendless and at home
too this loneliness finds an echo.

stanzas of twelve lines each. The tone is sad and dull. The language used is
contemporary. The poem does not have any rhyme. Simile, Alliteration,

‘Money’ is written by William H. Davies, a Welsh poet, known as
the ‘Tramp poet’. After several years of a wandering life, he
published his volume of poems. Through this poem, the Poet has
showcased his self-experienced philosophy about money and
personal happiness.
• The theme :- The theme of the poem is the dual aspect of
money. A rich man has many false friends and he lacks true
happiness. Whereas a poor man has few friends who are true and
real. Thus, he is enriched with goodness and happiness.
• Poetic style/ device / language :-The poem consists of
five stanzas of four lines each. It has a simple narrative style.
Alliteration, Antithesis, Inversion, Simile, Onomatopoeia and
Repetition are the figure of speech used in this poem. The rhyme
scheme of the first four stanzas is abcb and of the last stanza is abab.
