COORD) AT MILITARY HOSPITAL OF INDIAN ARMY
INTRODUCTION
1. In the past, in India and in most other countries, it was general tendency for a hospital to
be administered by a doctor. However, it was felt by the hierarchy that since Hospital
Management is an established discipline, officers with Masters In Hospital Administration must
be employed to undertake the responsibility of administration of the hospitals. This will ensure
availability of more doctors to perform medical duties, as also reduce the unwarranted, non-
specialized load of administration of the hospital. To this effect, a post of Colonel Coordination
has been introduced in the hospitals.
JOB PROFILE/ DESCRIPTION
2. Col Coord will be responsible for organizing daily activities of a hospital or healthcare facility
to include preparation of budget and management of allotted funds, recruitment and management of
civil and temporary staff, acting as a conduit between various departments and ensuring adequate
patient care.
ROLE AND TASKS
3. The role and responsibilities of a Col Coord will vary according to the size of the hospital and
and the specific duties assigned to him/ her by the Commandant of the Hospital. However his basic
roles will be as under:-
(a) Legal. Ensure compliance of all government rules, legal, ethical and statutory
requirements.
(b) Executive.
(i) Supervision of implementation of rules, regulations and procedures
regarding general functioning of the hospital.
(ii) Assist Commandant of the hospital in effective utilization of hospital
resources –material, funds, physical facilities and space
(iii) Compiling budgetary proposals after obtaining the same from various
departments.
( iv ) Oversee functioning of Central Purchase Committee for purchase of items
related to functioning of the hospital like medical equipments, medicines and patient related items.
Responsible for proper functioning of medical equipments and their AMC.
(v) Be part of the recruiting procedure. Maintaining personnel records of
temporary and hired personnel.
(vi) Assist Commandant in conclusion of contracts for services and hiring of
personnel for smooth functioning of the hospital.
(vii) Prevent/ cope with disasters, fire and theft.
(viii) Ensure procedures for efficient admission, care and discharge of patients.
(ix) Work closely with heads of clinical and ancillary services department in
developing and improving the quality and range of clinical services, diagnostic and treatment
facilities and protocol for efficient patient care.
(x) Work closely with nursing service in developing proper procedures for good
nursing and supportive care to patients.
(x) Organises committees for clinical audit, control of hospital infection, drugs.
