Alison: Hello everyone, today we are excited to share the captivating story of Coraline.
Directed by
Henry Selick and based on Neil Gaiman’s novel, this animated film combines elements of
adventure and horror.
Regina: This film is based on a legend from the town where the creator lived. It takes place in a
small town in England, where an old woman lived with her granddaughter after her parents died in
a fire. Doubts arose about whether the grandmother was caring for her granddaughter properly.
Nayra: One day, some townspeople entered the house to check on the girl, concerned for her
safety. To their horror, they discovered a chilling scene: in a cradle lay a baby that had been dead
for a long time, with buttons instead of eyes. This unsettling sight raised questions about the old
woman’s intentions and inspired the famous film we know today.
Marcela: Coraline Jones is an 11-year-old girl with a difficult temperament. She moves with her
parents to Oregon for better job opportunities as they write about plants and nature. They settle in
a large pink house with other tenants: Mr. Bobinski, a circus actor upstairs, and Mrs. Spink and
Mrs. Forcible, two elderly actresses who have many dogs they stuff when they die.
Fatima: Coraline is upset about moving to the new house because she misses her old home and
friends. Everything feels different, and she can’t shake off her sense of loss. Her parents assure her
she’ll like it once school starts and make new friends. To cope, Coraline explores her surroundings
and discovers a deep well in the forest. She meets Wybie Lovat, a strange boy who warns her not
to get too close.
Montores: During her exploration, Coraline finds a small door that looks like a dog door. She asks
her mother to open it, but is disappointed to find only bricks behind it. That night, she is awakened
by a mouse and follows it to a sealed door, where she discovers a tunnel leading to a parallel
world.
Alison In the alternate world, Coraline encounters her Other Parents, who are kinder but have
unsettling buttons for eyes. Initially uneasy, she enjoys a fantastic dinner with delicious food and
sleeps in a beautifully decorated room. The next morning, she wakes up back in her real house,
thinking it was just a dream.
Marcela : Later, Wybie tells Coraline that his grandmother’s sister disappeared in that area, which
is why he can’t enter the pink house.
Fatima: That same day, Coraline meets her eccentric neighbors. Mr. Bobinski mentions a mouse
that warned him not to go through the door to the other house. Ignoring this, Coraline decides to
return through the tunnel that night.
Regina: In the alternate world, Coraline meets her neighbors, all with buttons for eyes. She
befriends a talking black cat who warns her of the dangers. Despite the warning, she enjoys the
strange world until the Other Parents offer her a permanent stay if she lets them sew buttons on
her eyes. Terrified, Coraline refuses and argues with her Other Mother, who locks her behind a
mirror.
Marcela: Behind the mirror, Coraline meets the souls of three children killed by the Other Mother.
They urge her to escape and find their eyes so they can rest in peace. They explain that the Other
Mother spies on them through the buttons in the dolls’ eyes.
Fatima: Wybie helps Coraline escape back to her real world, where she discovers her parents have
been kidnapped by the witch. Determined to save them, she confronts the Other Mother and
strikes a deal: Coraline must find the eyes of three murdered children before an eclipse. If she
succeeds, the witch will free her parents; if not, she must stay with the Other Mother forever.
Nayra: With a green triangle given by her neighbors, Coraline can see the locations of the children’s
eyes. She finds the first eye by defeating her alternate father, the second at the neighbors’ house,
and the third at Mr. Bobinski’s show. The last eye is the hardest to retrieve, but with the cat’s help,
she gathers them all just in time.
Montores: Realizing she hasn’t found her parents yet, Coraline sets a trap for the Other Mother,
cleverly telling the witch that her parents are behind the door while they are actually trapped in a
snow globe in her bag. After an intense battle, aided by the cat, Coraline escapes to her real world,
freeing her parents and the other children.
Nayra: In the end, Coraline shares a joyful moment with her parents and neighbors in the garden.
All the neighbors are invited, including Wybie’s grandmother, who is the sister of one of the girls
the witch killed.
Fatima: While everything seems perfect, Coraline knows the Other Mother still watches her from
the shadows.
