INDUCTION TRAINING

1. Introduction

An employer has a legal and moral obligation to safeguard all employees and the public against injury
and disease, as well as risks to health and safety, from all operations associated with its business.
Management must identify all risks inherent in the company’s operations and take steps to manage
and control such risks. In the event of a prosecution, the employer will have to prove that managers
actively participated in the implementation and enforcement of health, safety and environmental
control within their respective areas of responsibility. This induction covers the responsibilities of the
employer and his/her appointed managers in terms of occupation health and safety and
environmental control.
LEGISLATION
 Election of health and safety representatives and committees.
 Duty to take all reasonable steps to prevent an incident, in addition to taking corrective action
after an incident has occurred.
 Implementation of a formalised risk assessment program.
 Liability of suppliers of goods/services to companies.
 Restricting actions that may have a detrimental effect on the environment.

RISK ASSESSMENTS
Ensure an Issue based risk assessment on your area of responsibility is carried out every second
year, unless:
 New equipment is commissioned.
 A health or safety incident occurred.
 An injury is sustained, no matter how minor.
 Processes are changed.
 An emergency occurred.
 A non-routine task is carried out which was missed with the baseline risk assessment.
Ensure that all risk assessments are recorded and records are kept at least until the next risk
assessment.
HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES
 All persons working with hazardous substances or that may be exposed to such substances
at the workplace receive training and refresher training on the storage and handling of
hazardous substances.
 Training must include first aid treatment in case of accidental contamination as well as
spillage clean up and disposal.
 Verify that latest MSDS is displayed at point of storage and use.
 Enforce use of correct PPE.
 Inspect storage areas to ensure compliance with storage requirements.

INCIDENTS AND ACCIDENTS

 Reportable incidents.
- An internal incident report must be completed for all incidents.
- Spillage of a dangerous substance.
- Uncontrolled release of a substance under pressure.
- Failure or fracture of machinery.
- Machinery running out of control.
- Fatalities.
- Person experience loss of consciousness.
- Loss of limb or part thereof.
- Is likely to be off work for a period of 14 days or longer.
- Any major incident.

 Incident Recording and Investigation.
- An internal incident report must be completed for all incidents.
- Every incident must be investigated and investigation results must be recorded on the
form.
- A copy of the completed incident form must be submitted to the OHS Manager.
- Incidents and investigation results must also be discussed in the H & S meeting.
- Managers must ensure that appropriate corrective action is taken to prevent a similar
incident from happening again.

COMPETENCY
 Planned Job Observations and Competency Assessments
 Ensure all employees are competent to perform their jobs without risk of accident or injury by
scheduling planned job observations at least annually.
 New employees must be allowed a training period followed by a planned job observation to
assess competency.
 Records of all job observations and assessments must be forwarded to the Safety
Department.

TRAINING
 All employees must be sent for SHE induction annually. ( Once a year )
 All employees must receive training and refresher training linked to their specific tasks or
duties.
 It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that all employees are competent to perform
their jobs and that where special licenses as for forklifts are required, these are renewed as
required by law.
AWARENESS PROGRAM
 5 Minute ‘toolbox’ talks at beginning of each shift
 SHE posters on notice boards (take care to rotate these regularly as no change in notice
board content will lead to employees not checking the notice board every day)
 Informal discussion of incident investigation results.
 Encourage the nurturing of scarce resources and ensure that employees do not leave taps
running, recycle items where practicable and reduce energy consumption where possible.
 Ensure records of awareness programs and names of participants are kept.
REQUIREMENTS:

Every employee is required to take all reasonable measures to ensure the requirements of the OHS
Act and
regulations are observed. The general duties of the employees are to carry out lawful instructions and
to obey
the company’s safety rules and procedures prepared in accordance with the provisions of the Act and
Regulations. For this process to begin and to be formalised, it is necessary for all employees to be
formally ACKNOWLEDGED.
