WELDING
Aim of the Experiment: - To make a butt joint and T- joint using the given pieces by Arc
welding.
Materials/Tools Required:- Mild steel plates of size 100x50x5 mm in 04 numbers, mild steel
electrodes, three way supply, rough and smooth files, Arc
welding machine with electrode holder, face shield, Gloves,
Apron, chipping hammer and try square .
Introduction: - Welding is a material joining process in which two or more parts
are joined together at their contact surfaces by application
of suitable heat/ pressure.
Arc Welding: - The heat is obtained from Electric arc between an electrode and a work piece or
between two electrodes.
Welding Joints
T-Joint: Here face of the vertical plate is placed perpendicular to the base plate.
⸰
Butt Joint: Here edges are joined by cutting the work piece edges into 45 , so that
perfect V-shape cavity is formed when both are connected.
Procedure:-
1. Four mild steel pieces of dimension 100x50x5 mm are cut from the mild steel sheet.
2. One edge of the two pieces is filed such that a V-shaped cavity appears when both are
joined.
3. The pieces are weld such that butt and T- joints are made.
4. Welding is done by bringing the electrodes closed to the work pieces.
5. The electrodes are moved sideways so that metal fills the cavity.
6. Slag form after welding is removed by chipping hammer.
Precautions:-
1. Make sure the electrode is not in direct contact with the work piece for a long time.
2. Do not touch the work piece as it is hot after welding.
3. File the pieces for butt joint carefully.
4. Use apron, face shield and gloves for safety.
5. Do not operate the welding setup in the absence of technical staff.
