Name of the Institution: Govt. Degree College Udhampur (J&K)

Year of Report: 2010-11

COLLEGE PROFILE

Govt. Degree College Udhampur was set up in 1961 as a three year degree course in Science &
Arts with a pre – university class attached to it. The first batch of 30 students was admitted on 27
June, 1961 and interestingly no. of girls (17) was more than no. of boys (13). The majestic
campus of this decades’ old college is situated in the outskirts of Udhampur town on a hillock
overlooking the Devika, the sacred Ganges of Jammu region. Since its inception the college has
achieved major landmarks, and is at present one of the leading institutions of higher learning in
the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
At present, the College provides instruction in the disciplines of Arts, Commerce, Science
(Medical and Non-medical), BCA and BBA. We also offer two Post Graduate Courses i.e. Post
Graduate course in English & Post Graduate course in Hindi. A sizable section of students
joining this institution comes from such families that mainly depend on agriculture and are
economically as well as socially weak. The College carefully caters to the educational needs of
this particular section of the society, and puts in every effort to ensure a gradual and meaningful
development of the students, both in curricular and extra-curricular domains.
The College has a highly qualified and experienced staff, well-equipped laboratories, rich
library, play-fields, Boys’ hostel, Multi-purpose hall and other infrastructural facilities. Besides,
the lush green splendid campus of the College, with a back drop of the Gangeda Hills, is
equipped with all basic amenities and provides a conducive environment for optimum learning
and ample reasons of attraction to the students.
Since the college is celebrating its Golden Jubilee Year, many new and innovative programs
have been initiated and an effort is being made for their sustenance. With the development work
in progress at present, it is hoped that this institution shall cater to the needs of the society in a
much better way. The alumni of the college are spreading its hue and fragrance in various fields
of nation’s service including education, administration, entrepreneurship, politics etc. The
prominent alumni are Prof.(Dr.) R.N.K Bamezai, Hon’ble VC SMVDU, Sh. B.S Mankotia,
MLA Udhampur, Sh. Mahender K. Sharma, Chief Judicial Magistrate Udhampur, Sh Anoop
Kumar,Magistrate, Sh. Ravi Kesar,IFS, Sh. Varinder Slathia KAS, Sh. Rakesh Jamwal etc.and
many more.
Vision

Govt. Degree College, Udhampur envisions to commit itself as a dynamic Institution of


Higher learning for the intellectual enrichment of minds to produce valuable and harmonious
human resource suitable to serve the community.

Mission

• To grow as a centre of generating intellectual wealth by offering high quality, varied and
relevant academic programs that foster critical thinking among the youth to create a
knowledge society.
• To promote and instill the ethics of social, cultural, national and global significance
among the youth through higher social interactions and extension programmes that make
them enlightened and responsible citizens.
• To ceaselessly audit, introspect and evaluate the existing mechanisms, upgrade them to
make them relevant and innovating to achieve educational excellence.

Introduction of the year under report:


The session under report( March-Feb 2010-11), being a Golden Jubilee Year of this College
found a galaxy of activities and initiatives in the College Campus; be it student activities,
teachers training, new clubs, infrastructure development, new proposals etc. IQAC came up with
few innovative organs to add to the vibrancy of this College. The entire session passed
breathlessly as strenuous efforts were made especially by the IQAC to translate vision into
action. An honest endeavor was made to make students feel at home on campus so that they
spend maximum time in learning in a conducive atmosphere. The admissions & results remained
very encouraging. An increase of 8% was noticed in enrollment with a 3.5% increase in girls’
enrolment. Outgoing students recorded a maximum of 98% pass percentage.

Detailed Action Plan 2010-11

Infrastructure Development:
Since the College is entering in its Golden Jubilee Years, so initiating such processes and
practices which have not been taken up for the last 50 years will be taken up on priority basis.
The College shall bear a new look in the days to come; be it in Academics, infrastructure, Sports,
extra-curricular ,ICT up-gradation, etc.-let there be a revolution in every sphere of our
operations!
Student Amenities
 Renovation of Girls’ Common room , provide furniture , a water cooler, water purifier and
renovate the wash room.
 Garden chairs for the College playground and the central Lawn “Vatika” to facilitate
students’ sitting.
 Installing water coolers and water purifiers in the College.
 Ceiling fans for the classrooms and the hostel.
 Repair of the fixed furniture of the lecture theaters to provide a comfortable sitting space to
the students.
 New beds for the college hostel.
 Repair of the window –panes.
College Development
 Reviving the College Publications
 Proposal to the UGC for the College face lifting under Golden Jubilee Scheme.
 A new Principal’s chamber to be established with an attached washroom, pantry and a
retiring room.
 Upgradation and air conditioning of Computer lab .
 Renovation of Staff quarters.
 Whitewashing of the corridor of the Administrative block. It shall be tiled and beautified
by developing a green grass stretch alongside.
 Renovation of the college office.
 Division of the PG halls into four small classrooms to provide independent structures to
the PG Departments of English and Hindi.

 Establishment of a State- of the-Art Conference Hall. It shall be centrally air conditioned
and fitted with all necessary multi-media equipment.

The examination committee took various measures to ensure a transparent conduct of
internal and external examination. The entire conduct of examinations , regular as well as
private, throughout the session was made centralized. The College staff was also deputed
to other Govt./private institutions as Flying Squad.

NSS unit of this College organizes various programs to develop a sense of responsibility
towards their Community in the youth . This unit has adopted a old age home and its volunteers

26. Increase in the infrastructural facilities:


Student Amenities Enhanced:
The college management focused on infra structural development of the Campus , especially the
students amenities. The problem of students parking, safe drinking water facility, laboratory up
gradation etc. were taken on priority.
 Girls Common room was renovated, beautiful and equipped with furniture, a water cooler,
water purifier and a renovated wash room.
 Twenty garden chairs have been fixed in College playground and the central Lawn “Vatika”
to facilitate students sitting.
 Water coolers and water purifier have also been installed in Department of Chemistry
Department of Zoology and College Hostel to provide a clean and hygienic drinking water
facility.
 Seventy Ceiling fans have been purchased and installed in the classrooms and the hostel.
 The fixed furniture of the lecture theaters has been repaired to provide a comfortable sitting
space to the students.
 20 Numbers of new beds have been provided in college hostel.
College Development
The decades old college building badly required repair and renovation. The water seepage at
various place had de-plastered and hence de shaped it. An effort has been made to renovate it to
some extent as it is an uphill task.
 A new Principal’s chamber has been established with an attached washroom, pantry and
a retiring room.
 Computer lab has been upgraded and air conditioned.
 Staff quarters have been renovated and issued to the staff members. These quarters bore a
bad shape before this repair.
 The corridor of the Administrative block has been white washed, tiled and beautified by
developing a green grass stretch outside it.
 The college office has been renovated.
 The PG halls have been divided into four small classrooms to provide independent
structures to the PG Departments of English and Hindi.
 The staff room has been renovated and air conditioned.
 A state of the art Conference Hall has been established. It is centrally air conditioned and
fitted with all necessary multi-media equipment.
 A Biological Museum has been established in Botany Dept. which dis-plays various
models and species.
 Foundation stones of National level Volleyball Court, Canteen Block, Face lifting
project, Information Cell & Parking Hub laid

27. Technology up gradation:


 College website www.gdcudhampur.in was launched on the inaugural day of Gulden Jubilee
Celebrations by the Hon’ble Vice Chanceller of SMVDU Katra Prof. (Dr) R.N.K Bamezai.
 Computer with internet facility has been provided to all major teaching departments.
Networking facility has been established in the computer lab.
 Almost all the teaching departments have been provided with Internet Broadband
connections to promote IT mediated teaching – learning.
 All the constituent units of the College have been connected with Intercom facility to
smoothen the communication and enhance the work efficiency.
 08 new computer systems and allied accessories have been purchased and the distributed
among various departments so that the teaching learning may be made more ICT mediated.

 Computer with internet facility has been provided to all major teaching departments.

 Internal Quality Assurance Cell organised one day workshop on Information Security in
collaboration with DOEACC Centre Jammu in the college conference hall on Feb. 21st 2011.
The faculty members, students of PG and UG classes attended the workshop.
 Internal Quality Assurance Cell organised an 80 hrs DOEACC Computer Literacy Camp
sponsored by Dept. of Science and Technology for students and staff w.e.f., 26th Feb. to 7th

The current year being the Golden Jubilee Year proved to be Renaissance for the College;
