POEM: TRAVEL
Paraphrasing
Stanza 1:
I want to get up and go to the land of golden apples. I want to go where the parrots island is
situated. Where the lovely birds and animals exist. Where the lonely boat makers build their
boats. Where the high rising mosques and minaret have the first rise of the sun.

I want to go to the place where the gardens are sandy. Where many valuable things from near
and far are brought for sale in the market. Where the Great Wall of China encompasses. On its
one side there is a desert with sand and wind. On the other side, there are cities echoing with
sounds of bell, drum and people’s voice. I want to go to the forests that are burning hot and that
are wide as England. They got trees as tall as spire. They are full of apes and cocoanuts. And
there the Negro’s huts are located.

I want to go where the wild crocodiles in the Nile are lying and waiting for something to eat.
Where the flamingo bird feeds on the fish. Where the devouring tigers in search of a hunt in the
jungle exist. Where a passerby is enjoying a comfortable journey in a covered litter carried by
bearers. Where an abandoned city lies in the desert.

Oxymoron: near and far
Enjambment: Where the knotty crocodile/ Lies and blinks in the Nile,
o Lying close and giving ear/ Lest the hunt be drawing near,
o Or a comer-by be seen/ Swinging in a palanquin;—
Stanza 4:
The abandoned city where all the children whether poor or rich have grown and now have left
the city. There are no inhabitants. Streets and houses are all empty. There is no movement of a
child or even a mouse. When its night time, it’s completely dark. When I grow up, one day, I will
come with a camel caravan to the same city to bring the signs of life. I will light a fire in the dark
and dusty dining room.

Oxymoron: Sweep and prince
Enjambment: There I’ll come when I’m a man/ With a camel caravan;
o Light a fire in the gloom/ Of some dusty dining-room;
Stanza 5:
There I will see the pictures of heroes, fights and festivals engraved on the walls. I will find toys
of the old Egyptian boys in the corner.
