In this presentation we will learn:
1
Names, shapes, and main uses of most tools
equipment's used in the lab.
2
• Flat conical body and cylindrical neck.
Erlenmeyer • Allows contents to be swirled or stirred during
flask an experiment – narrow neck keep the contents
from spilling out and reduce the evaporating.
• Simple container for stirring, mixing and
heating.
Beaker • Generally cylindrical in shape with a flat
bottom and a lip for pouring.
• Available in a wide range of sizes.
3
• Flat bottomed bulb with a long neck usually
Volumetric fitted with a stopper.
flask • Used for making solutions to a known volume.
• The neck has a single ring, graduation mark and
a label.
• Used to accurately measure the volume of an
Graduated
object.
cylinder
• More accurate and precise for this purpose than
flasks and beakers.
Test tube
4
• Common piece of glassware consisting
of a finger-like length of glass or clear
plastic tubing, usually with a rounded
U-shaped bottom.
• Available in a multitude of length and
widths, and sizes.
Test tube brush
• Used to clean the inside of a test tube or any other
long-necked glassware.
5 Beaker tongs Test tube holder
• Used to carry a beaker after it • Used to carry a test tube after it
has been subjected to a heat has been subjected to heat or/and
and/or cold temperature. cold temperature.
6
• A utensil used to transfer solid
Scoopula (usually in powder form).
• Small scoop used to
Spatula transfer powder and crystal
chemicals.
7
• Is a graduated glass tube with a tap at
Burrete one end, for a delivering a known
volumes of liquid especially in a
titration.
• A stand used to support a ring
Ring stand clamp or test tube clamp.
8
Funnel • Used for pouring liquids or other substances
through small opening and narrow-mouth
containers such as flasks and bottles.
Filter paper • A semi-permeable paper used to
separate fine substances and used
widely in filtration to separate solid
things from liquids.
9
• Used to grind materials.
Mortar and • The substances to be ground is placed in the
pestle mortar and ground, crushed or mixed using a
pestle.
• A shallow glass or plastic cylindrical
Petri dish lidded dish that biologists use to
culture cells and bacteria.
10
• A laboratory weight machine that measure the
mass of an object (solid, liquid or wide range
of uses).
Electronic
Balance
11
Commonly used in chemistry, biology and
medicine to transport a measured volume of liquid.
Pipette
12
• Commonly used in separation of fluids and other
substances using the centrifugal force at high
speed, thereby separating fluids at different
densities..
Centrifuge
13
• Is a container filled with heated water.
• Used to incubate samples in water in a constant
temperature over a long period of time.
Water bath
14
• Used for sample drying, sterilizing, evaporating
and dehydrating and other general laboratory
work.
Oven
15
• Used usually for sterilization of wide range of
microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, viruses and spores.
• Uses steam under pressure to generate high temperature.
Autoclave
• Is an instrument that measures the amount of photons (the
16
intensity of light) absorbed after it passes through sample
solution.
• By spectrophotometer, the amount of a known chemical
substance (concentration) can also be determined.
Spectrophotometer
17
• A type of ventilation device that is designed to limit
exposure to hazardous or toxic fume.
