RIZAL’S
FIRST
HOMECOMING
Rizal’s Plan
for First
Homecoming
Rizal boarded Djemnah and
was the only Filipino on
board the ship.
Aims for Going Home:
(1) Check what happened to his novel
(2) Check his beloved Leonor Rivera
(3) Excited to be home after 5 years in
Europe
On August 8, Rizal returned to
Calamba and there, he established
medical clinic. His first patient was
his mother. News of the arrival of a
great doctor from Germany spread
far and wide and patients called
him “Doctor Uliman” because he
came from Germany.
Pro’s &
Con’s of
Noli Me
Tangere
The findings on the novel read as
follows, to wit;
“heretical, impious and scandalous in its
religious aspect, and unpatriotic, subversive
of public order and harmful to the Spanish
government and its administration of these
islands, in its political aspect”
Rizal &
the
Governor
General
The findings on the novel of the UST Board
of Censorship showed another high
personality and that was Governor
General Emilio Terrero. The comments of
Terrero had been, “You wrote a novel that
aroused much comment and I wish to read
it.” He really appreciated the work,
knowing that it only discussed the political
and social conditions of the country at that
time.
Rizal’s
Departure
Again
At 9 pm on August 6, 1887, Rizal arrived in
Manila and had a courtesy call to the governor
general. He gave a copy of the Noli to the governor
general who read the novel out of curiosity. The
governor general then provided Rizal a bodyguard
by the name of Lt. Jose Taviel de Andrade. The
storm created by the Noli Me Tangere put pressure
on the friars as they believed that Rizal attacked
their cruel policies and unbiblical doctrines. The
threat on Rizal’s life pushed him to live in exile
again in other parts of the globe.
