PART 1

Radio panic
At eight o’clock, in New York city in October 1938,
thousands of people were listening to a live radio
broadcast of dance music. About five minutes into
the programme, the music suddenly stopped and
a newsflash announced “We know now that in the early years of the twentieth century, intelligences greater
than man’s and yet as mortal as his own are watching us closely and are going to attack.” This started the
panic… telephone lines to police stations jammed. Some people rushed into the streets, others phoned the
authorities and offered help in the emergency.
Because so many people believed the broadcast, radio announcers explained three times during the
programme that the events were not real but part of a radio programme. Most people did not believe these
announcements and the panic continued. Later that night the police and news services managed to restore
peace and end the panic.
In fact, people were listening to a dramatization of H.G Well’s novel The War of the Worlds and the programme
was the work of Orson Welles. The radio station faced heavy criticism in the following weeks but the publicity was
very good for Orson Welles’ career.
Thanks to what became known as the “panic broadcast”, the radio program signed Campbell’s Soup as a
sponsor, and soon after, Welles signed a contract to direct Citizen Kane named by the American Film
Institute as the greatest movie of all time.
