The ocean is a large body of salt water that covers most of the

Earth's surface. It contains almost all of the Earth's water and

plays a vital role in the planet's climate and weather.
What the ocean is made of
 The ocean is made of salt water.
 It contains about 97% of the Earth's water.
 The ocean's average depth is 12,100 feet (3,688 meters).
What the ocean does
 The ocean stores heat from the sun and transfers it to the
atmosphere.
 The ocean's water evaporates and condenses into clouds,
which release water as rain.
 The ocean's currents carry heat around the planet.
How the ocean is divided
 The ocean is divided into five main areas: the Pacific,
Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Southern Oceans.
 These oceans are connected and water flows freely between
them.
 Smaller parts of the oceans are called seas, gulfs, and bays.
How the ocean is changing
 Climate change is causing sea levels to rise.
 This is leading to more extreme events like storm surges,
flooding, erosion, and landslides.
