Importance and Threats to Oceans

Oceans cover 70% of the Earth and contain 96% of the planet's water. They are home to over 700,000 species and produce 70% of the oxygen we breathe. However, oceans are threatened by rising temperatures, pollution from litter and oil spills, and overfishing. Some species are at risk of extinction and coral reefs are dying due to temperature increases. We can help protect oceans by reducing plastic use, choosing reusable items, and properly disposing of trash.

Oceans of the World

An ocean is a large body of salt water. Oceans cover 70% of the Earth´s surface. They contain around 96%
of all the water on the planet. Oceans are the world´s largest habitats and are home to a wide variety of
plants and animals. There are over 700,000 different animal species that live in the oceans. Sea plants help
to produce oxygen, which humans need to breathe. There are 5 oceans on Earth: the Pacific, the Atlantic,
the Arctic, the Indian, and the Southern. The Pacific Ocean is the biggest ocean in the world. Here you can
find the Great Barrier Reef, the world´s largest coral reef. You can also find Challenger Deep, the deepest
place on Earth.
Why are oceans important? They generate 70% of the oxygen we breathe, help to regulate our climate and
provide people with different activities.
What is happening to our oceans?

• Sea temperatures are rising. This causes living things, such as corals,
to die.
• Pollution is causing major damage to the oceans. Litter, fertilizers from
fields and oil spills pollute our oceans. This pollution kills marine life and destroys plants.
• There is overfishing. Some species of sea creatures are in danger of becoming extinct. The balance
of the ocean is under threat.
What can we do to protect the oceans?

• Walk and cycle

• Use less plastic
• Use reusable items
• Throw litter in bins

What is happening to our oceans?

• Sea temperatures are rising with some areas of the ocean seeing a
temperature rise of 2°C in the last one hundred years. This causes
living things, such as corals, to die.
• Pollution is causing major damage to the oceans. Litter, fertilizers from
fields and oil spills pollute our oceans. This pollution kills marine life and destroys plants.
