Politics keep government officials accountable for their actions so they can’t abuse
their power.
3. It can shape the future of the country-
You should get involved in politics because it can shape the future of our country.
4. It’s the backbone of our democracy-
Politics is the backbone of our democracy, and it’s a way that we can all work
together and make changes to the laws that govern us.
5. With politics, we can understand what is fair and not fair-
It helps us understand what is right and what is wrong.
6. It’s a way for people to be heard-
Politics is important because it makes sure that everyone gets a voice in government
no matter what race or religion they belong to or where they live or how much money
they have in their bank account etc.
7. Politics supports and affects the quality of life-
Politics is an integral part of human societies, from their beginnings to the present
day.

Politics is important because it helps us make decisions about our lives based on
facts rather than feelings or emotions.

Governance- It is the act of governing or ruling. It is the set of rules and laws
framed by the government that are to be implemented by the representatives of the
state.

Good governance can ensure that corruption is minimized, the views of minorities are
considered and that the voices of the most vulnerable in society are heard in decision-
making. It is also responsive to the present and future needs of society.

Good governance is defined focusing on the following:


1.Legitimacy- (government should have the consent of the governed)
2. Accountability - (ensuring transparency, being answerable for actions and media
freedom),
3. Competence- (effective policy making, implementation and service delivery), and
respect for law and human rights.

Characteristics of Good Governance


1. PARTICIPATION- It is one the aspects of good governance, by both men and women,
must partake directly or indirectly (having a representative) in every governmental
process.
2. RULE OF LAW- It means to say that good governance manifested through the
impartiality of fair legal framework
3. TRANSPARENCY- It means that decisions are taken, and their enforcement is done
in a manner that follows rules and regulations.
4. RESPONSIVENESS- Good governance requires that institutions and processes try to
serve all stakeholders within a reasonable timeframe.
5. CONSENSUS ORIENTED- Good governance requires mediation of the different
interests in society to reach a broad consensus in society
6.EFFECTIVENESS AND EFFICIENCY- Good governance means that processes and
institutions produce results that meet the needs of society while making the best use of
resources at their disposal.
7. ACCOUNTABILITY-It is a crucial requirement for good governance.

What is the government about?


Government- is a group of people who rule or run the administration of a country.
Forms of Government
1. As to the number of the persons exercising sovereign power:
a. Monarchy- It is the supreme and final authority that is in the hands of a single
person.
b. Aristocracy- It is the political power is exercised by the few privileged class.
c. Democracy- It is the political power exercised by most people.
2. As to the nature of tenure of the officials:
a. Heredity- It is the power and authority that are passed on to one who is a relative
by consanguinity.
b. Elective or Popular- It is the political power is exercised by the few privileged
class.
3. As to extent of powers exercised by the central or national government:
a. Unitary Government- It is the control of national and local affairs exercised by
the central or national government.
b. Federal Government- It is the powers of government are divided between two
sets of organs, one for national affairs and the other for local affairs.
4. As to relationship between the executive and the legislative branches of government:
a. Parliamentary- It is the state that confers upon the legislature the power to
terminate the tenure of office of the real executive.
b. Presidential- It is the state makes the executive constitutionally independent of
the legislative
