The 2022 Philippine Elections: Who to vote?
By Ma. Kyryll M. Bebis
“Youth is the catalyst of change” I bet you have heard it thousand times from different articles and
medias. They say youth is the future of the world because they have the ability to influence their
peers to become responsible citizens. And by means of a responsible citizen, their vote matters
to create a society of progress and excellence. I would like to grab this opportunity today to speak
as a representative of the youth as I aim to influence my peers and the society to become
responsible citizen by knowing what kind of leader we need to vote in this upcoming 2022
Philippine Election.
There is a list of presidential candidates but only one can win the highest position in the
government. The President is the one who serves as the head of the state and the head of the
Philippine Government. Thus, our country’s future is entrusted to them. So the question is, who
should we entrust for our country? What kind of leader we should vote?
First, I stand for someone who has plans to uplift poverty and will raise our economy above
progress. In the latest article published this January 2022 by Madeleine Keck in Global Citizen
Website, poverty in the Philippines grew about 23.7%. Over 26 million number of Filipinos in
poverty has now risen just under 25% of the population. We need a leader who has plans to solve
the issue on poverty by making the economy rise through opening different job opportunities, and
by widening trades and businesses. We need a leader who has compassion and care for poor
people, and is a business minded which will be beneficial for the progress of the economy.
Second, we need someone who will support education as a priority, as the popular saying goes,
“Education is the key to success”. Imagine how youth can provide for the country’s future if they
are competent and successful enough in their different fields. By giving each Filipinos an
opportunity to go to school free and by giving a global quality of education, you are leading them
to path that can help the country continue to develop and progress. We need a leader who sees
the advantageous side of prioritizing education. We need a leader who will support the youth’s
dream for themselves and for the country.
Third, we need someone who will protect the country and the people. According to the 1987
Philippine Constitution, Article II, Section 4, “The prime duty of the government is to serve and
protect the people”. The importance of defense and military or civil service plays a huge role to
defend and ensure the safety of the people and the state. We need a leader who thinks about the
safety and security of his land. We need a leader who will protect and will give us home.
Those are the characteristics of a leader that we should seek to vote. We need someone who
cares for poverty, economy, education and the safety of the people and of the state. There is only
one way to have that type of leader, and that is by choosing and voting wisely. To my fellow youth,
you are the voice of the democracy. You are the catalyst of change who has the power to lead
the future generation of the world. Dream for the country, vote wisely.
