Promise

On my honour, I promise that I will do my best; To do my duty, to God and my country,

To help other people and To obey the Scout Guide Law.

Motto

The Scout motto is “ Be Prepared”. This has to be achieved by being physically strong,
mentally awake and morally straight.
Scout Sign

The Scout sign is given by raising the right hand in level with the shoulder, palm to the
front with three fingers stretched together and the thumb covering the nail of the little
finger.

The sign of three upraised fingers stand for the three parts of the Scouts promise. The
third thumb covering the little finger stands for protecting the weaker people.

This sign is used when:

1) Making and reaffirming the scout promise

2) Introducing to other scouts when not in uniform

Scout Sign
Scout Salute

The Scout Salute is given by raising the right arm smartly to the level of the shoulder,
palm to the front with three fingers stretched together, the first touching the forehead
above the centre of right eye brow and thumb closing on the little finger. After salute the
arm is smartly brought down.
If a stick or thumb stick is carried, it must be passed to left hand or kept under left arm
pit. When a staff is carried the salute is given with left forearm bent at right angle at
elbow with three fingers open, thumb closing on the little finger palm down wards, the
first finger touching the staff. When hands are occupied, the salute is given by eyes left
or right as the case may be.
Scout Salute is an expression of mutual esteem and good-will. It is a mark of respect
and good manners. It is the privilege and not a service act. It is an outward expression
of the spirit of discipline and respect for the other. The manner of saluting indicates the
standard of discipline and the state of training and the morale in the Unit. It is the
privilege of the one who sees first to salute first.
Left - Handshake

The left-handed handshake is a formal way of greeting other Scouts around the world.
In most situations, the handshake is made firmly, without interlocking fingers, and many
organizations only use this handshake when both people are in uniform.
Shake greeting with a smile shaking hands with left and saluting with the right is a
specialty of the movement. Founder conceived left hand shake as a form of greeting the
members of the movement. The idea originated from an incident in his military career in
South Africa. When Col. Baden-Powell entered the capital city of the Ashanti tribe in
1896, he was received by one of the chief, who while greeting him formally extended his
left hand. B.-P. held out his right hand in return. But the chief said "No, in my country,
the bravest of the brave shakes with left hand."
Good turn

It is truly said that charity begins at home. We should be able to help our elders, brother
and sister in what ever little way we can. Even a little help will be sometimes great relief
to them. Our aim is to form habit of being helpful to others. A scout has to keep a diary
of such good turns daily and have to show them to their scout master. A good turn knot
at the end of the scarf reminds us of doing a good turn everyday.

The World Scout Flag

The World Scout Flag consists of the World Scout Badge in white encircled by a white
cord, the ends of which are tied with a reef knot, set on purple background. Purple is the
International colour of Scouting. It stands for the service-oriented nature of scouting.
The Knot is the symbol of the Scout Brotherhood. The three petals show the 3 parts of
the promise and the shape denotes the right direction of the compass. This flag was
adopted by the world conference in 1951 at Lisbon.
