Steps and tasks.
Please take notes under each of the instructions below – you may include pictures, drawings, written reflections,
links to music and videos etc
1. Read through the entire list and add some if you can think of extra – then decide and note when you will
complete each task and how long it should take.
2. Choose an emotion or the set intention of “No Way Out”
3. Brainstorm ideas of what that means and what your key intentions are that you with to successfully
communicate with your audience.
4. Improvise and experiment with an initial example fore each of the Actions and how you could use this action
to communicate your intention:
Include a video or images to document your choices.
GESTURE
LOCOMOTION
ELEVATION
FALLING
TURNING
STILLNESS
5. Connect some of these actions to create a single phrase that lasts between 8 and 32 counts and record it.
6. Create a rough outline of the Form or Structure for your dance – decide how the overall structure will look.
7. Develop your work, to the point of realization. Keep checking that you are selecting movements that will
effectively communicate your intention.
8. Rehearse and refine – it is often a difficult decision to change or completely get rid of sections of your
choreography that don’t work. Record your work and watch it as a group. Discuss what works and come to
consensus before making changes.
Perform! In the performance of your work, you need to show the extent of your skills for each action and clearly
communicate your intention to the audience.
Action – Group Performance
Your task is to create, rehearse and perform a short dance work that demonstrates the application of your understanding of the six main actions in Dance: Gesture,
Locomotion, Elevation, Falling, Turning and Stillness. (Duration 1:30) It may be to music of choice, and use costumes and props, but this is only to support your
work. It should not take up too much class time and should not reduce the creativity of your movement choices nor become the main way to communicate your
intention.
