GROUP PERFORMANCE OR SOLO PERFORMANCE
TERM 1
[TOTAL: 25]

TOPIC: Technique and Composition (Structure and natural gesture)

INSTRUCTIONS:
- Work alone or with one partner only.
- Create a series of quick studies of a figure, similar to the visual source given below.
- Paying close attention to form, weight distribution and gesture, rework any sport of
your choice into a dance routine, using the same type of movements.
- Remember that the emphasis is on capturing the technique of the sport through a
dance routine. Thus, simplify the routine, heighten the expressive qualities of the
pose and extend the limb movments for gestual movement to look natural.
- All of the planning and steps should be included in the theory part of this
assignment.
- Now get a sound-clip that will contribute to this dance sequence you have chosen.
Have a look on the internet, there are such great possibilities to work with. If you
don’t have internet, listen to the radio or make a recording of natural sounds in your
everyday life.
- Now find natural gestures for each of these steps and let it flow into each other. The
idea is that your movements tell the story without you having to talk.
- Now use your knowledge about dance sequence and choreography to add a natural
dance style to the work you have planned and prepared.
- For the theory part you should compile a pamphlet that captures the weight
distribution and expression of your body during the performance.
- Include abstract images to show how natural gestures occur during your dance
routine.
- Include a list of moments that you chose to exaggerate to reveal structure in your
dance.
- Your performance can adhere to any dance style/genre as long as it portrays a
specific sport. The dance can’t exceed 3 minutes.
Tip:
It is always nice to include some kind of costume accessory/prop/décor piece to tell
a story with. Work hard and be committed to the success of this activity from day 1.
This will make your teacher and class mates super proud!
Comedy ensures a satisfying reaction from an audience, try it out?

YOU WILL NEED:

- A friend that is just as committed as you are, otherwise it is strongly suggested that
you work alone.
- Inspiration and research to put your ideas into action.
- Your workbook to document all your work steps and brainstorming.
- A natural sound-track that contributes positively to your ‘daily routine’.

BEFORE YOU START:

- Ensure that your planning has been done in your workbook.
- Paste all your ideas into your workbook if you have any (which is a good suggestion).
- Ask your teacher for guidance if it is needed.
- Avoid changing your mind and ideas after planning has been done or during
rehearsal.

NOW YOU CAN START BY DOING THE FOLLOWING:

- Establish if you will work alone or with someone, and your rehearsal times.
- Establish a rehearsal routine to which you will commit.
- Do the research, planning and preparation first to ensure your understanding of the
theory. You might also find it much easier to work something out if you find a sound-
clip that you like.
- Show your performance to someone other than each other and ask for feedback and
suggestions.
