Chapter I
Introduction
Background of the problem
Ten students were interviewed about the negative effects of screen time. They
mentioned that it Reduced attention span: Constantly switching between screens and
multitasking can lead to a decrease in the ability to focus and pay attention, which can affect
academic performance. Memory retention issues: The constant stream of information on
screens can overload the brain, making it difficult to retain information for long periods of
time. Poor sleep quality: Sleep disturbances and disrupted sleep patterns can lead to fatigue
and difficulty concentrating during the day, affecting academic performance. Reduced
physical activity: Sedentary behavior associated with screen time can lead to a decrease in
physical activity levels, which can impact academic performance. Social isolation: Spending
too much time on screens can lead to social isolation and a decrease in face-to-face
interaction, which can negatively impact academic performance. Overall, screen time can
have a significant negative impact on academic performance by affecting attention span,
memory retention, sleep quality, physical activity levels, and social interactions.
Excessive screen time has been found to have negative effects on sleep quality in the
Philippines . A study on Filipino children aged 24 to 36 months found that spending more
than 2 hours on screen media was associated with a decrease in sleep duration and poorer
sleep quality. In the Philippines, teenagers who used screens for more than 7 hours per day
had a 40% lower chance of excelling in school, while those who used screens for 2 to 4 hours
per day had a 1.23 times higher chance of getting good marks (Micael et al., 2017).
Excessive screen time can lead to reduced attention span, poor memory, and difficulty
with problem- solving. It can also interfere with the body's natural sleep cycle, causing sleep
deprivation and daytime fatigue. Prolonged exposure to screens can result in eye strain,
headaches, and blurred vision. Additionally, students may neglect face-to-face interactions
and relationships, leading to social isolation. excessive screen time has been linked to
decreased motivation, reduced focus, and poorer academic performance because they cannot
focus in their studies. Another possible negative effect of screen time on students'
performance is the disruption of their sleep patterns. This, in turn, can affect their cognitive
functioning, memory, and overall academic performance. Additionally, the use of digital
devices before bedtime can make it harder for students to unwind and relax, further
disrupting their sleep patterns.
We conducted this study to see how much time high school seniors spend on screens
and how it affects their grades. With so many teens using digital devices, we're worried about
how it might affect their ability to learn. By understanding this, we can help teachers,
parents, and policymakers come up with better rules for screen time to help students do better
in school.
II. Conceptual Framework
IV DV
STUDENTS’
SCREEN TIME SPAN EFFECT
PERFORMANCE
Figure 1
Our conceptual framework explores the relationship between screen time span as the
independent variable and academic performance as the dependent variable. Screen time span
refers to the duration of time individuals spend engaged with electronic screens, including
smartphones, computers, and televisions. Academic performance encompasses various
indicators such as grades, test scores, and overall educational achievement.
III. Research Hypotheses
Ho. There is no significant effect of screentime span to Grade 12 students’ performance.
Ha. There is a significant effect of screentime span to Grade 12 students’ performance.
IV. Statement of the problem
This study aimed to find out the effect of screen time span on students’ performance on
Grade 12 students’ in KNHS.
Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:
1.What is the reason/s of excessive screen time of grade 11 students?
2.How many hours in a day did the respondents spend using their gadgets?
3.What is their 1st sem general average grade?
4.Is there a significant effect of the screen time span to their academic performance?
