UNIDAD 4: Pronombres Personales (Personal Pronouns)

Personal pronouns are essential in both Spanish and English as they replace nouns and
help indicate who is performing an action. Understanding these pronouns will enhance
your ability to communicate effectively in Spanish.

Personal Pronouns in Spanish

Subject Pronouns

Here are the subject pronouns in Spanish along with their English equivalents:

Spanish Pronoun English Equivalent


yo I
tú you (informal)
él he
ella she
usted you (formal)

nosotros/nosotras we (masculine/feminine)
vosotros/vosotras you all (informal, masculine/feminine, used mainly in Spain)
ellos they (masculine)
ellas they (feminine)
ustedes you all (formal)

Usage

• Yo: Used when referring to oneself.


o Example: Yo soy estudiante. (I am a student.)
• Tú: Used when addressing someone informally.
o Example: Tú eres mi amigo. (You are my friend.)
• Él/Ella: Used when referring to a male or female, respectively.
o Example: Él es profesor. (He is a teacher.)
o Example: Ella es doctora. (She is a doctor.)
• Usted: Used when addressing someone formally.
o Example: Usted es muy amable. (You are very kind.)
• Nosotros/Nosotras: Used when referring to a group that includes oneself. Use
"nosotros" for a mixed or all-male group and "nosotras" for an all-female group.
o Example: Nosotros vamos al cine. (We are going to the movies.)
• Vosotros/Vosotras: Used in Spain to address a group informally. It’s less
common in Latin America.
o Example: Vosotros sois mis amigos. (You all are my friends.)
• Ellos/Ellas: Used when referring to a group of males or females, respectively.

o Example: Ellas son maestras. (They are teachers.)
• Ustedes: Used in Latin America for both formal and informal situations when
addressing a group.
