Oral Communication in Context

Learning Competency:
Differentiates the various models of communication (EN11/12OC-la-3)

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
a) identify the models of communication in context;
b) compare and contrast the different models
of communication; and
c) illustrate the models of communication in real-
life contexts.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: <Models of Communication=
Reference: Oral-Communication-Module-3-Models-of-Communication-
Final-Copy.pdf (deped.gov.ph)
Materials: lnstructional Materials, Papers,
Strategy: 3I’s (Introduction, Interaction, Integration)

III. Procedure
A. Preliminaries
1. Prayer

<Everybody stand and can you

lead the prayer=
Yes Sir.

ln the name of the father,

the son, and the holy spirit.
Amen….............=

2. Greetings

<Good morning everyone.=

<Good morning Sir Jusay=
<Before you take your seat, kindly arrange
your chairs and look around if there’s some
mess.=
<Okay, Sir.=

<Done=
3. Checking of Attendance

<May I know who is/are absent today?=

<None, Sir=

<Very Good!=
4. Review

<Before we begin let us have a short recap of

the topic we discussed last week.
<Yes Sir=

Previously we discuss the Elements of

Communication. Can you still remember
these elements?=

 What are the Elements <Source=

of Communication? <Message=
<Channel=
<Receiver=
<Feedback=

<Very Good=

5. Motivation: 4 Pics 1 Word

Since you have provided comprehensive

answers, you are ready with the new topic.
But before that, let us have first an activity
entitled, 4 Pics 1 Word.

ln the activity, you only have 2 instructions. (Doing the activity)

First, l will be showing 2 sets of pictures.
These pictures are your hint in guessing
the word. Second, each set of pictures
provides hints to our topic for today. lf you
are familiar with the 4pics 1word
application that can be downloaded to your
phone, that is exactly how to play the game.
To answer, you just need to raise your
hand. Sounds fun? Let’s start!

<This is the first set of Pictures. You are

given 20 seconds, to guess what it is.= <Model, Sir=
<Correct, the answer is Model=

<This is the second set of Pictures. You are

given 20 seconds, to guess what it is.=
<Communication, Sir=
<Excellent the answer is Communication=

Wow, l bet analyzing is your talent! That was

quite easy, right?

<How helpful are the pictures in guessing

the words?= <l had fun, Sir and the
pictures were really helpful,
without them, it is
impossible to guess the
word=
<Very good, I am glad that you had fun! We
all know that one of the useful things in
communication is our eyes. Yes we talk
using our mouth, we also listen with our
ears but, we also use the eyes in
communication. A while ago we utilize the
eyes to guess the words through the
pictures. The picture guided us with the
answer and the picture serves as a model
for us to get the right answer, am I right?=

So, based on the words you had guessed,

what do you think is the topic for this day?

<The topic is Models of

Communication=
<Excellent!=

B. Lesson Proper

1. Introduction

<Our Topic for today is all about the Nature

and Elements of Communication particularly <Objectives: At the end of the
Communication Models. But before we proceed, lesson, the students will be
kindly read our objectives for this able to….........................=
morning for us to be guided=

<Thank you . Today will be

going to… (Explain the
objectives)=

<Let us start this day by answering the

question, what is a Model of Communication? Let
us dissect Model and Communication to emphasize
each of the words that form the phrase. Now let
me ask you, what is a Model?=
<A model is like a
representation of a thing=

<A model is something we

follow and imitate=

<Very well said!=

<There are a lot of ways to define a model. A model

is a pattern or figure of something to be made.
When we try to paint a tree, we look for a tree as
our model. That model is what we call a reference!
Even when cooking! We look for patterns to be
followed. That cooking model is what we call, a
recipe! When writing an academic paper, we also
look for models! Those models are Formats!

Let me ask you a question,

 What do you want to be when you grow up? <I want to be a Seaman=
<I want to be a Teacher=
<I want to be a Singer=

<Wow! I am looking forward to seeing you as

professionals.=

 Do you have someone you look up to? <Yes, Sir. I look up to my

dad! He is a policeman=

<Yes, I look up to BTS, they

inspire me to become a
singer.

<Indeed! As for me, I became a teacher because I

have someone l look up to! That person is my
model! we always look for models. Those persons
whose footsteps we follow are our role models.

see? models are everywhere and we use them in

different kinds of things! Same with
COMMUNICATION.
 So what is, the Model of Communication?
<Communication Model
helps us understand the
process of communication=

<Correct!=
<We have Models of Communication to help us
understand better the process of communication in
every different situation.

2. Interaction

Group Activity: 1. <Make a Model!=

The mechanics of this activity is simple.

Students will be divided into 5 groups. A
scenario will be posted, and you will use your
comprehension skills as you read the
scenario. Your task is to make a diagram
based on the scenario. A picture of the 3 (The students will perform
models of communication is provided in each the given tasks for 10
group as a guide. The goal is to use your minutes)
creativity and illustrate your imagination
with your group. After accomplishing the
first task, the second task is to showcase your
outputs in front and there are questions that
will be asked. Every time your group will be
called, the last member to stand will answer
the question=

Let’s proceed!

Scenario:

Mr. Arellano, the secretary of the mayor made

a call to the head nurse of the Rural Health
Unit, <Mrs. Villaver, you are called for an
emergency meeting this afternoon= during his
call, noise appeared (transmission error) and
the head nurse received <called for= only. So,
the head nurse asked the mayor’s secretary (Reads the scenario)
<I’m sorry but what is that you are calling for,
sir?=

 Who is the sender?

<the sender is, Mr. Arellano

 What is the message?

<Mrs. Villaver, you are called
for an emergency meeting
this afternoon=
 What could be the possible noise?
<No signal=
<Low battery=
<The load was not enough=
 Who is the receiver?
<The receiver is Mrs. Villaver=
 Can you give a short explanation
of your Diagram?
(The group performed their
explanation)
 How important are Models to see
the process of communication?

<It is important because it

represent as to visualize the
different communication
situation, Sir=
<Thank you all for the participation.
lndeed, it is important to know the process of
communication. =

<We have three Models of

Communication used to see the process of
communication.

1. LlNEAR
2. lNTERACTlVE
3. TRANSACTlONAL

<Let’s begin with Linear.=

<Here, we have a picture of a person listening
to music. Reading a book. Watching the news
on television. Listening to the sermon of the
priest. What is common in these
communication situations?=
<All of the situation is one-
directional, Sir=
<Correct. In all the situations it is one-
directional! This means you cannot give direct
feedback or reply to the sender.
The Linear way of communication is a one-
way process.

An example of the Linear Model of

communication is by Shannon and Weaver
Model.

This model suggests that communication

is simply the transmission of a message
from one source to another.

 Can you break down each part of

the model?
<Yes Sir, we have the sender,
message and feedback=
 Can you provide an example of a
Linear Model?
<Watching a YouTube video,
Sir=
 Is Linear Model the Model you
made in your Diagram a while
ago?
<No, Sir=
<The Second Model of communication is the
Interactive model.”

l want you to watch this video.

 What have you noticed in the

video? <In the video, there is a
response between the
person involve=
<Right!=
An interactive model - is an improved
process. lt still begins with a sender, in which
a speaker encodes a message using different
channels. The receiver listens as he or she
decodes the message. Feedback is the next
stage of the process, where the receiver sends
a response to the sender that continues the
communication cycle.

An example of the lnteractive Model of

communication is by Schramm model of
communication

 Can you provide an example of

the Interaction Model?
<Heart to heart talk with my
mother, sir=
 Is Interactive Model the Model
you made in your Diagram a
while ago? <The scenario awhile ago is
an example of lnteractive
Model, Sir=
<Very Good!=

<The third Model of Communication is the

Transactional Model=

l want you to watch this video.

 What have you noticed in the

video? <There are a lot of people
involve in the
communication situation,
Sir=
<Correct! As clearly shown, there are a lot of
people involved in the process of
communication, senders and receivers are
everywhere! With that, noise is also present
everywhere.=

The Transactional Model - is a circular

process of interaction of people. All these
people involved actively participate in a
communication situation and they actively
send feedback to each other.

 Can you provide an example of

Interaction Model?
<Talking to my barkada in a
beach with a lot of people,
Sir=
<Excellent!=

3. Integration

Group Activity: Make a Scene

lnstruction: Students will be grouped into 3. Each

group is assigned to 1 model of communication. (The students will perform

assigned model and present the scenario in the
class. You are scored based on the Rubric:

Group 1- Linear Model

Group 2- lnteractive Model
Group 3- Transactional Model

Rubric:

Cooperation

IV. Evaluation
Directions: Talk about the similarities and differences of the three given
models of communication below; the things they have in common and the
ways in which they differ by illustrating them through a Venn diagram.

V. Assignment
Based on a movie or television show, describe an interaction between
two characters that is linear and transactional in nature. For the linear
model, explain how the sender and receiver's channels, environment, and
noise impact the exchange. For the transactional model, explain how
feedback, the fluidity of communication, and the relational nature of
communication impact the exchange.
