A GOLD MINER

A gold miner works deep underground. He goes down the mine shaft in a cage. He carries a
lamp on his helmet to give him light. When he arrives at the rock face, he digs (13 dig) out the
rock with a pick. It is this rock which contains the gold. He then puts the rock in a skip and
pushes the skip back to the shaft. Another skip takes the rock up to the surface.

CAPTAIN THABISO KWENA

Thabiso Kwena is the captain of an aeroplane. He lives in Johannesburg. Every Monday


afternoon he flies from the airport in Johannesburg to Mombasa in Kenya. It is a long flight and
takes over three hours. On the way to Mombasa they fly across the borders of Zimbabwe and
Tanzania. They arrive in Mombasa early in the evening.

Meet Captain Kwena

Hello! My name’s Thabiso Kwena and I’m the captain of this aeroplane. James and I are both
pilots. He is the co-pilot of the aeroplane. We work for All Africa Airlines. We fly all over the
continent.
I’m a very lucky man. I have an exciting job. James has an exciting job too. I meet lots of
interesting people. I travel to all the major cities in Africa.
Come and see my aeroplane. This is the cockpit where we work. It is full of instruments. The
instruments give us information about our flight.
This section of the aeroplane is for the passengers. Lindiwe here is an air hostess. She checks the
passengers’ tickets and shows them to their seats. During the flight, she serves them a meal and
sorts out any problems they have.
Over there is Peter, the aeroplane mechanic. He tests the engines and makes sure they are all
right.
Here come the first passengers. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to All Africa
Airlines. I hope you enjoy your flight.
