What is Paraphrasing?
● Rewriting someone else’s ideas in your own words.
● Avoids plagiarism while keeping the original meaning.
● Used to make a text simpler or easier to understand.
Techniques for Paraphrasing
1. Use Synonyms
○ He was angry about the mistake. → He was furious about the error.
2. Use Antonyms (Opposite expressions)
○ The man is tall. → The man is not short.
3. Use Negatives or Opposite Expressions
○ Rajshahi is hotter than Dhaka. → Dhaka is not as hot as Rajshahi.
4. Break Up or Combine Sentences
○ John finished his homework. He went outside to play.
→ After finishing his homework, John went outside to play.
5. Change the Order of Clauses
○ Despite the heavy rain, the event continued as planned.
→ The event continued as planned, despite the heavy rain.
6. Use General Words
○ The factory manufactures boxes. → The factory makes boxes.
7. Change the Form of Words
○ Mr. Ahmed had five children. → Mr. Ahmed was the father of five.
8. Use "There + Be" Structure
○ Museums are not needed anymore. → There is no need for museums anymore.
9. Change Active to Passive Voice
○ The teacher explains the lesson clearly.
→ The lesson is explained clearly by the teacher.
How to Paraphrase Correctly
✔ Keep the original meaning
✔ Use synonyms and sentence restructuring
✔ Make the paraphrased version about the same length as the original
✔ Do not add new ideas or opinions
✔ Cite the source properly if needed
Examples of Correct & Incorrect Paraphrasing
✅ Correct:
● Flu symptoms involve a high temperature and a stuffy nose.
● Regular exercise helps maintain a healthy lifestyle. → A healthy lifestyle can be maintained
through regular exercise.
❌ Incorrect:
● The symptoms of flu are fever and nasal congestion. (Too similar to the original)
● Exercise is not important for staying healthy. (Changes the meaning)
