Some people say that in our modern age, it is
unnecessary to teach children about the skills of
handwriting.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is believed by many that skills of handwriting today are not worth being
taught to children. Although there are several valid arguments on this belief, I
firmly disagree with this due to some reasons that are elucidated in this essay.
On the one hand, there are certain reasons for this idea. The initial reason lies
in the proliferation of technological devices. In modern society, hand-written
texts are gradually replaced by cutting-edge devices, such as laptops or
smartphones, which are more convenient and less time-consuming, thereby
avoiding delays in their daily lives and their study as well. Most extra classes,
for example, give assignments to students through some digital platforms such
as Zalo or Gmail and require people to handle them directly on these platforms.
In addition, exchanging information through handwritten texts is less efficient.
This is mainly because it is unavoidable for people to make mistakes while
writing, especially for those who are careless. In certain urgent situations, there
may be some unreadable words which are badly-written, which would lead to
misunderstanding of the context or reduce the efficiency in their study.
On the other hand, I am still of the opinion that the ability to write plays a vital
role in children’s lives for some benefits, two of them are a great way to
develop qualities in children and preserve cultural diversity. Regarding the
former, writing could help students to become more patient and calm, and
careful. This is primarily due to the fact that students have to thoroughly check
their texts during the process of writing, thus improving students’ concentration
on the subjects or calming students with the signal of attention-deficit and
hyperactivity disorders down. In terms of the latter, handwriting symbolizes the
whole country and a unique culture so that the lack of handwriting skills in
students means that a crucial part of a nation would be lost. For this reason,
teaching handwriting skills to students should be incorporated in their
curriculum to offer students a sense of national identity. This is a great way to
maintain the cultural heritage among generations in the long run.
In conclusion, while some people believe that children needn't acquire
handwriting skills due to other superior tools and increased efficiency in their
study, I strongly disagree with this idea because people could develop their
qualities through writing and preserve their cultural and historical values.
