Read the Sources below and answer the questions that follow.

Source A: The following passage is about the ‘indulgences’.

For the Catholic Church, an indulgence can help its recipients

‘cleanse’ their sins.
People must perform particular action to receive indulgences. For
example, saying a specified prayer, visiting of a particular place
or performing specific good works. Indulgences were used to
support charities like building of hospitals and schools.
Indulgences had become ‘commercialized’ by the late Medieval
Ages, and the problems had become so serious that the Church
could hardly prevent the abuse of indulgences effectively. Some
members of the Church sought to get a large amount of money for
each indulgence.

Source B: The following passage is about Martin Luther and his religious belief.

In 1517 Luther drafted the ‘Ninety-Five Theses’, criticizing

the Catholic Church’s practice of selling indulgences. He
argued that the Bible rather than Church officials was the
central religious authority and that humans could not
achieve salvation by their own acts, but that only God
could help humans do so by his divine grace.
Martin Luther’s ideas contributed to some important
changes of Christianity. The Catholic Church was divided
afterwards, and the Protestantism soon emerged.
