BLOCK 4
Read the following passage about climate change and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet
to indicate the best answer to each of the following questions from 23 to 30.
Climate change is one of the most significant threats to biodiversity today. As temperatures rise and
weather patterns shift, many species find it difficult to adapt. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF),
nearly one million species face extinction due to habitat loss, changes in food availability, and increased
competition. For example, polar bears are struggling to find sea ice, which is critical for their hunting and
breeding.
In addition to direct effects on species, climate change disrupts ecosystems, which can lead to a
cascade of consequences. Coral reefs, known as the "rainforests of the sea," are particularly vulnerable. As
ocean temperatures rise, coral bleaching occurs, leading to the death of these vital habitats. This not only
affects marine life but also the millions of people who rely on reefs for their livelihoods.
Efforts are being made globally to mitigate the effects of climate change and protect
biodiversity. Initiatives such as reforestation and conservation programs aim to restore habitats and create
protected areas. In Costa Rica, a national park system has been established to preserve various ecosystems
and the species that inhabit them. This has helped to increase biodiversity and improve resilience to climate
change.
Technology also plays a role in conservation efforts. Innovations such as satellite monitoring and
DNA barcoding help scientists track changes in wildlife populations and assess the health of ecosystems.
Additionally, public awareness campaigns aim to educate people about the importance of biodiversity and
encourage sustainable practices that can reduce their carbon footprint.

Read the following passage about the topic “For a Quick Pickup” and mark the letter A, B, C or D on
your answer sheet to indicate the option that best answer to each of the following questions from 23 to
30.
For a Quick Pickup
People would drink coffee or tea in the morning to pick them up and get them going for the day. Then
cola drinks hit the market. With lots of caffeine and sugar, these beverages soon became the pick-me-up of
choice for many adults and teenagers. Now drink companies are putting out so-called “energy drinks.” They
have the specific aim of giving tired consumers more energy.
One example of a popular energy drink is Red Bull. The company that puts out this beverage has stated
in interviews that Red Bull is not a thirst quencher. Instead, the beverage is meant to refresh a tired
consumer’s body and mind. In order to do this, the makers of Red Bull, and other energy drinks, typically
add vitamins and certain chemicals to their beverages. The vitamins, chemicals, caffeine, and sugar found in
these beverages all seem like a sure bet to give a person energy.
Health professionals are not so sure, though. For one thing, there is not enough evidence to show that all
of the vitamins added to energy drinks actually raise a person’s energy level. Another problem is that there
are so many things in the beverages. Nobody knows for sure how all of the ingredients in energy drinks
work together.
Dr. Brent Bauer, one of the directors at the Mayo Clinic in the US, cautions people about believing all
the declarations energy drinks make. He says, “It is plausible if you put these twelve things together, you
will get a good result.” However, Dr. Bauer adds the mix of ingredients could also have a negative impact
on the body. “We just don’t know at this point,” he says.
