Today I visited Misha Broughton, my English instructor, during his office hours for the
course "GENED 1110.02: English," which fulfills the General Education Writing requirement.
Misha Broughton identifies with the field of English and Composition, and our conversation
provided valuable insights into both the course content and the broader discipline.
During our discussion, Mr. Broughton explained that the central aim of the English
discipline is to explore how writing and rhetoric can be used to communicate, persuade, and
engage with different audiences. One essential question in this field is: "How can we use writing
to shape thought and influence action?" It seems this question is at the heart of much of the
work done in the discipline. We also discussed how English scholars employ research methods
that involve analyzing various forms of communication, including essays, speeches, and digital
media, to understand how language functions in society. Our conversation also touched on how
the course connects to General Education themes. Mr. Broughton Explained that the course
falls under the "Writing and Communication" foundation, emphasizing how essential
communication skills are to academic success and real-world applications. I believe the skills we
develop in writing can enhance our critical thinking abilities and prepare us for various
professional fields, including my own in Computer Science.
One aspect of our conversation that surprised me was learning how English scholars
engage with community-driven projects, such as writing workshops and creating accessible
educational resources. This involvement with the community allows English scholars to apply
their work outside the classroom, making an impact through their writing in a variety of ways.
And In terms of my personal goals, I found the conversation particularly valuable because I’ve
always been interested in how effective communication can shape different fields, including my
own major. The skills in writing and rhetoric that we are developing in this course will definitely
help me improve my ability to explain complex ideas clearly, a crucial aspect of my future work
in Computer Science.
Mr. Broughton also shared how his interest in writing and teaching evolved, explaining
that his passion for literature and writing began in college and grew as he realized the
importance of communication in all areas of life. This personal journey of academic exploration
was inspiring and showed me the value of following one’s interests in developing expertise.
If I were to take more courses in this theme or foundation, I believe I would benefit from
a deeper understanding of how writing and communication skills can be applied to my future
career in computer science and to my specific field of game design. The ability to communicate
complex ideas effectively will be invaluable, both in my academic studies and in the professional
world of technology.
